Elliot was enjoying the day so far. He was letting Carrie and Belle and Ezra do a lot of the selling, though he had made his share of sales too. He didn't mind doing something like this, where he was behind a booth, helping out, and he was more than willing to talk up the bakery for them, since he was a big fan. Really, though, he was most enjoying just hanging out with people he liked. He had his girl, and every now and then he would steal a little kiss, and he had his little sister, and Ezra was his friend and it was good to see him and catch up. Maybe now that life was a little more under control, he could actually spend some time with the people he called friends in his life.

"So how's it all been going?" he asked Ezra as there was a slight lull in selling things. He'd known this would be a popular booth, and he was being proven right.

Ezra really was glad that Carrie had asked him if he'd want to come and help her out at the Festival. It got him out of the house, and working along side Carrie, Belle and Elliot was kind of nice; he didn't see enough of either Carrie or Elliot, which was just as much his fault as anyone else's. So this was giving him the perfect opportunity to catch up while helping out a good cause. Plus, seeing Ariel earlier in the day hadn't been a downside either, he was quickly starting to count her as a friend and was more than happy to see a familiar face around this place ( ... )

Elliot had heard about the break up before Ezra had told him, of course, but it had been good to hear from someone else besides the people who had told him about it. On the whole he had kept quiet about the whole thing in a public sense, not wanting to get drawn into it all. He had a lot of practice from when he grew up with walking that fine middle line between everyone and every thing ( ... )

Ezra shrugged, nodding at Elliot's comment. "It is. Though it feels like I spend most of my life adjusting." Which was something he figured Elliot would understand, and he appreciated knowing that the older man was around if he needed someone to talk to about this. Or better yet, if he needed to get out and do something to forget about it for awhile, or blow off steam. "Either, or." he answered with a laugh, a small grin tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Think things are as well, and I have to say I've never really volunteered for something like this before." Though it was more he'd never had the chance, so he was glad to be able to help out today.

He was glad to hear that Elliot and Belle were adjusting, it figured it had to be tough going through what they went through. Especially with the lack of an actual body to confirm anything. "That's good, and Belle's doing okay?" Ezra asked his voice lower since Belle was only on the other side of the booth from them.

Looking over her shoulder as she bagged another dozen brownies - bless Lis for going back to Jones and getting another box of the big bags - she grinned faintly at Belle, who was hurriedly moving more scones onto the next table over. She handed the woman her bag with a smile and checked the lock on the cash-box with a skim of her thumb - unnecessary since she was right there, but it was habit - then pushed at her hair before taking a loaf of white bread and half a dozen scones from the next customer. Carrie motioned for Belle to lean in before the other girl scurried back up the line of tables, and murmured as she drew closer. "Can you grab me some more business cards when you get finished with those?" Nodding her thanks as Belle knelt down to grab the box of cards done up just for the event, she paused long enough to pass the younger girl the card-holder so she could refill it, continuing in the same low voice. "Good thing we have 'em; I think we've probably handed out a bajillion. You've been putting them in people's bags, right?" ( ... )

Elliot grabbed her sister briefly, pressing a spontaneous kiss of affection to her temple as she passed by, and released her back into the booth with a grin, taking her spot up near Carrie.

"How are things going?" he asked in a low voice, slipping an arm lightly around her, hugging her lightly to his side. "Jones is getting a lot of good advertising, I think." He was pleased, anyway. He loved the bakery, though he knew she was working much too hard lately and he hoped they could find someone or some someones to help out there.

"They go," she answered, voice just as low as El pressed her closer. She looked up, face cheerful if a little tired, and smiled slightly, enjoying the moment of not having to do anything but just stand still. "I think I may have to call Lis and ask her to bring more plain brownies and more of the vegan baguettes -- we figured the brownies might go quickly, but weren't sure how quickly." Running a hand over her hair to smooth it, she raised an eyebrow as she watched Belle's current customer begin ordering what seemed like half the selection of vegan breads on the table. "And the success with the vegan breads was always going to be a toss-up, but I may have to call her while she's still out, and put in an order for more."

Cocking her head, she rested her temple against his arm. "Still holding up okay yourself? Do you and Ez need to step away for a bit, catch your breath?"

Elliot brushed his fingers across her cheek gently as she looked up at him. "I could have told you that the brownies would go quickly," he said teasingly. "Especially with me and Ezra manning the booth." He winked, joking. He'd only had one, and he'd paid for it. "The vegan breads, I admit to having no clue on. Still not even sure I know precisely what they are."

He kissed the top of her head gently. "I'm holding up all right. This is actually kind of fun, in a way." It reminded him of fundraisers he'd assisted with in the past. "How about you, precious? Need a break? I can spell you for a little while, let you get off your feet and take a few. I'd offer a foot rub, but I can't do that if I'm covering for you." He rubbed up to her shoulder, squeezing it gently.

She and El had joked last night about putting bets on how busy the booth was going be, but at this point, she kind of figured both of them would have lost. But if they did really well, Carrie had said earlier, Jones would get a boost to push them through the holidays, and the older girl had looked really hopeful, so Belle hoped it happened too. Giving her customer her best polite Winters smile - the woman had been so picky - she let Carrie handle cashing her out, and nudged her braid behind her shoulder before looking up again.

"Can I help someone over here?" She got up on her tippytoes, projecting her voice a little louder so people could hear her over the crowd.

Star grinned over the counter, having tried to sidle up to it without being immediately noticed. "You can help us," she said brightly, beaming at Belle over the space, Shelby's arm still looped in hers. She might not be happy with the whole Dad and Miss Neve thing, but she wasn't going to let that ruin everything else today if she could help it. "We'd love some brownies or something."

"Hey!" She grinned, big and bright, at Star, then Shelby, and wrapped her arms around herself as she leaned over and lowered her voice. "Dude, it is totally busier than we thought it was gonna be. Carrie's sister's already gone back to the bakery to get more!" Waggling her eyebrows triumphantly, she did a little wriggle of glee. "How're you guys? Having any fun?" She tilted her head and flashed Star an apologetic look. "Sorry I couldn't come hang out like you e-mailed about -- Carrie'd already asked if I'd help, though she said when Alice got back that I could come find you, if you were still here." Tightening her hands on her arms, she grinned impishly. "So! Brownies? Cookies? Cinnamon buns? Cookie bars?"

Shelby thought it was kind of nice to get away from her Mom and Jake for awhile, well, they weren't really away because they were at the other end of the booth talking to Ezra. But at least they weren't hanging over them anymore. She was trying her best to be happy for her Mom's sake, but she still couldn't get over the weird feeling she got when she thought of her Mom moving on from Dad. Smiling, she laughed when Belle leaned towards them and lowered her voice. "Are you sure Carrie's sister didn't have to go back because My Uncle's already eaten half the inventory?" Shelby joked, though she wouldn't put it past her Uncle Ezra. Scrunching up her nose, Shelby thought about Belle's question briefly. "Yeah, I guess so. I get to see both you and Star, so that's definitely a fun aspect." Shrugging her shoulders, Shelby pondered the question for a moment before answering. "Is that really a question? I don't know about Star but I'm definitely here for a brownie."

More animals had been added at the last minute to the line-up than she had originally helped plan for. One of their best volunteers had had to call out this morning because her youngest needed to be taken to the doctor for a bad cough. Moira and Jill had gotten lost with the other van, which had all the bigger animals. And Ellen's three oldest were trying to use the smaller cages as toboggans, for some reason only known to them, right in the middle of everything. But this could all be fixed, Mia thought to herself as she set her lips and made pushing motions at her wrists, before she laughed silently at herself for automatically falling into the habit of pushing up her sleeves. Nabbing the three children, she split them up and put them to work, sending nine-year-old Missy to "help Miss Ariel unpack her pretty things," and six-year-old Danny to help Sallie put out the trays of home-made pet treats the shelter staff had spent the night before making ( ... )

"Bring me a cookie or something," he called after Evan, who was high-tailing it towards a French bakery booth, his roommate's enormous sweet tooth intrigued by the fresh smell of something or other. Shaking his head and pushing his hands deeper into his pockets with a chuckle, he kept his own slow pace, happy to just wander around and see everything. For all that Evan had said it was a small thing run by the brother and sisters who held the land, this was actually a pretty good size, all considering. Pretty darn good for last-minute, if the intel the other man had was fresh. Bigger than some of the events he'd been to that had had a whole year's worth of planning. Barely pausing in front of a table selling handmade soaps, slowly inhaling and closing his eyes against the sudden sharp memory the lavender scent gave him, he shook his head and sauntered on, humming almost silently under his breath ( ... )

Ariel didn't mind keeping an eye on some of the kids while she was running her little stand in the booth. She liked kids, and she didn't have to focus all the time on her table, just keep an eye on it, really, and talk up everything to passersby. She looked over when she noticed Emmy nearly run into someone.

She looked up--whoah, way up--at the man standing there. "Apple," she told him, taking the little girl's hand and tugging her closer, lifting her with the ease of long practice up to rest on her hip. Even if she hadn't done it in awhile, it was something she'd done a lot through the years. "Want a slice or a pie? Money goes to the shelter to help the animals."

Used to that split-second of "okay, my eyes still haven't met yours yet," particularly from women, he grinned a bit and nodded, crossing his arms lightly over his chest. "Mm, sounds good." After he tilted his head to make a gentle, funny face at the toddler, he reached two fingers under the lip of the nearest pie plate, considering his choices. "Hmm. If it were just me, I'd say maybe a slice. But if I do that, my roommate'll get to it first." Flicking his eyes up to the teeny blonde, he looked at her curiously. "How much for a whole one?"

Ariel smiled, tilting her head slightly as she regarded him. He was huge, height-wise, and broad-shouldered, but those were traits she could admire. Emmy giggled quietly in her arms, ducking her head slightly against Ariel's shoulder. "Well now, how much will you give me for it?" she replied back lightly, wondering how much she could get for the pie, as it was purely donation.
