Maureen had woken up super early, full of what Layla would call Thinky Thoughts and hadn't been able to shake them. She was worried about Dess and Adam and everything going on there. She'd have to make a point to give Adam a call sometime in the next week, maybe see if Layla wanted to watch Ethan or something.

But, since she had gotten up so early, she had slipped out of the place without Layla or Charisma knowing and made her way to the park. Hopefully a run would turn her brain off. She was just settling into her pace when she noticed the jogger ahead of her fall, worry instantly setting in. She slowed, carefully making her way to where he had rolled. "Hey, there. You okay?" she asked, kneeling next to him. "Looked like a doozy of a spill."

Piers sat there and blinked as a woman approached him off the path. It briefly occurred to him to apologize for ruining her run, "Umm yes, I should be fine in a minute. Just lost my footing and the rest of it just happened." He groaned. In a few minutes he was going to be mortified that he had done this in public.

"I'm not usually such a klutz."

Maureen laughed slightly. He seemed to be okay, just had the breath knocked out of him. "Hey, I saw the whole thing. That rock totally jumped out and tripped you." She teased lightly, sticking around for a couple of moments to make sure he really was okay.

He gave out a weak laugh that turned into a wheeze. "Yeah, perhaps I should arrest it for assaulting an officer." Piers joked. "Thanks for stopping though and sorry to have up ended your run." He struggled to stand up as he shook the cobwebs out of his head. "Were you just starting or ending?"

Maureen raised an eyebrow as he ran ahead of her, she definitely wasn't going to complain about the view. Much easier to check him out. And then she mentally facepalmed; it had definitely been too long. She grinned at him. "Is that safe? Would hate to see you fall again because you're not watching where you're going."

"Well, thank you. And I don't know. You're no worse than a house-full of pre-teen girls." Shit, why had she said that? Well, it was out there, if he picked up on it.

Piers realized she might have a point about the not watching where he was going, but he shrugged. "Well it's good for my quads to run them the other way and besides, if I fall I know I'm with someone who'll help me up." He told her cheekily. "But I should be fine I do it all the time and am really not the klutz I came off as today."

He blinked, trying to process that comment. "Preteen girl? I must admit I have no experience with those at all, that might be a good thing."

"Mm, I don't know. I might have to point and laugh if you fall again." She teased lightly. "And I s'pose I'll have to believe you, as I have nothing to compare it with."

She watched him blink and sighed internally. It was out there, nothing she could do. he was attractive and she was having fun talking to him though. Definitely not what she had expected to find on her morning run. "I have intimate knowledge, having been one and now raising one, so trust me when I say you have nothing on one for.. how did you put it, tigger-like qualities when one gets tickets to their favorite band."

"Guess you'll have to run with me again and let me redeem myself." Piers teased. It wouldn't do his ego any good to know she thought he was totally clueless.

"I will trust you on that. Being a preteen boy was hard enough I don't really want to try it as a girl." He looked at her again. "You are a mother of a preteen? No way. My tigger might seem calm compared to that."

Maureen wasn't melting at that soft grin, she absolutely wasn't. "Well, the diner has good people in it, so you have a good start to your friend base there I suppose."

She tapped the tiny piece of technology on her hip, nodding. "Yes, we have. And breakfast sounds good." Wait. That was ringing a bell. She looked over at him. "Do you often order a dozen rolls to take home?" Was he the one Dess had said she should meet? Heh. Maybe she should have listened more closely about that, but she was pretty sure Dess had said he was a cop.

Maybe she was right, he could make more of an effort to talk to people when he was there, it was usually that he was so tired when he got there he was just fueling up to go to bed. "Guess I'll have to get to know people there a little better."

Piers could feel his face heating up as she asked about his ordering habits. "Umm I might have done so a couple of times?" Or at least ten but that made him sound like a glutton.

Maureen chuckled. "Well, then we would have met eventually. Dess keeps saying that I should meet one of our best customers." The cute cop was how she had described him and Maureen would have to agree with that description.

Oh, was he blushing? She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye. She couldn't be sure, they were both flushed from running, but he looked a bit redder than he had a moment ago and they were cooling down now.

Piers opened his mouth to say something and found himself at a loss of words. He hadn't realized his buying habits weren't normal even though his father had always told him he had hollow legs. "Well... that's good to know that even if I hadn't been clumsy I would have met you."

He ducked his head down to check on his shoe laces, it wouldn't do for him to trip again.

Maureen nodded. "It was a long way to happy, but I am now."

"Ouch." Maureen felt for him. "He wanted you to follow in his footsteps there, huh?" She tilted her head to the side. "How long has it been? Since you moved here and since you've talked to your father?"

Piers shrugged, "I'm not sure he wanted me to follow in his footsteps or not, I just couldn't take any more orders. For years he was the Captain and I wanted a father. He couldn't do both. And I couldn't accept less anymore."

He had to think about it. "Almost nine months now. I am not even sure he knows where I went. I just told him I had taken a position in another state and that I would be gone by the end of the week. Packed up Moby and drove to Texas. Took two days." Piers told her with a dry laugh.

Maureen nodded. "Sounds like you did what was the best for you." After a moment's hesitation she reached out and squeezed his hand lightly, trying not to blush. "So you haven't had any contact with him since?" She could kind of relate, only she'd never had the guts to stand up to her mom.

Pulling her hand back, she smiled at the waitress as she came back with coffee. "Thanks," she said to her, reaching for the sugar and glaring when the girl winked suggestively at her.

He gave her a smile and squeezed her hand back. "Yeah and I don't miss Chicago that much so it all worked out." Piers shook his head. The server brought over more coffee for them. "Umm no, the captain is never wrong and I expect he thought I'd eventually cave and make contact or go home. He forgot that I'm my mother's son too."

Maureen's lips curved and she nodded. "Yeah. A date," she confirmed, her voice soft. She glanced at him from under her lashes shyly. "No confusion, really. I... Just haven't been asked out in close to fifteen years. I'm a little rusty." Crap. she hadn't been on a date since she was in her early twenties. What was she going to wear?

Smiling back, Piers nodded. "Yeah, I'm out of practice too although not being married I have had other dates in the past 15 years, just not that many." It was probably best not to tell Maureen that he was a little socially awkward at times.

"How's your brunch."
