According to his doctor, Cody was going to be stuck with the crutches for another three weeks, at least. After that, he would have a cane for an addition seven to eight months, at least, depending on how his knee healed and his physical therapy went. It was going to be the summer, if not longer, before he would be able to bear his full weight on his right leg without the risk of further damage. And that was if everything went very well and there were no setbacks or concerns between now and then.
On one level, Cody had been aware that it wasn’t an injury with a quick healing time. But, on another level, he’d assumed it’d be somewhat normal within a month or two. After all, he’d had the surgery shortly before his birthday in November then had been stuck in the hospital for two and a half weeks after that due to some concerns over the surgery. He’d had the crutches for five weeks already, and he hated the damn things. He wouldn’t like a cane much more than them, but at least it wouldn’t be so difficult to do, oh, everything with a cane.
The doctor’s appointment today had pushed him into a stubborn place that Helena, fortunately, hadn’t recognized as easily as Rori would have if she’d been around. As soon as he was taken home, he waited for Helena to quit fussing over him and leave before he grabbed the keys to his truck. It was several years old now, but it was the first truly big prize he’d ever won, since the cost of it was definitely more than any of the prize money he had gotten elsewhere, and he planned to keep it until it was falling apart. Then he’d get it fixed.
He shouldn’t be driving yet. He hadn’t specifically been told not to, since his sisters never gave the doctor reason to believe it was a consideration, so he was just going to ignore the doctor’s voice in his head warning him to be careful. He threw the crutches into the cab and carefully hoisted himself in after them. It wasn’t easy, not with his bum right leg and the brace keeping his knee from bending much at all, but he finally got in. It was too late to accept that this might not be the best idea because, hey, he was finally in his baby after months of seeing her sitting forlornly in the drive-way.
He shifted on the seat until his right leg was stretched out, and his body was angled so his left foot could reach the accelerator. It was such a joy to be driving again, to not be dependent on someone even for a few brief moments, that he drove all around his neighborhood then headed south. He ended up around the TCU campus, which was pretty but expensive looking. When he saw a Kroger supermarket ahead of him, he pulled into the parking lot.
While he hadn’t had much experience with grocery shopping over the years, he knew it was time to do something for himself. He got his crutches and walked to the front of the store, only realizing after he got there that pushing a cart wasn’t going to be easy. He was nothing if not determined, though, so he struggled a bit but managed to get one free from the row of carts. He used his left arm to push it along ahead of him as he walked into the store, eyes widening as he took in the huge produce and fresh food section. He had no idea what to buy, so he just carefully made his way over to the cheese section and tried not to run into anyone or to knock into any displays.
