It was a day off, and the 'event' was exactly what the colony 'needed'-- a feeling of community. Winter was done, and the sun was shining, and the kids were out of school for the day. It was the sort of gathering that could make a person forget that it wasn't Earth, or, perhaps, that it really wasn't so far-fetched that one could call this homeThe children's noisy laughter was infectious. The games of tag, and Red Rover were played; the children needed no lectures about treating those 'special kids' properly. When all was said and down, the children played 'hard' and laughed harder. Add the puppies into the mix, yapping and running about, and it could easily be called a 'success ( ... )

Macaroni salad. What was it about potlucks that inevitably brought out mountains of macaroni salad? Of course, if it wasn't macaroni, it was potato. Or, of course, the requisite three-, sometimes four-bean salad, with its vinegary tang and sharp scent ( ... )

Now the 'log cabin' Molly shared with five other females, two other Sidhe and their adopted daughters, was nothing like this one. Their shelter was a one room structure with wattle and daub between the smaller logs left over from clearing the site. The roof of the much smaller construction was thatch. It looked rather like something she had seen at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, such as Washington's soldiers used during the Revelutionary war ( ... )

Sally Brookfield's cooking was legendary. The first bite of her cornbread more than confirmed the woman's status in Darien's mind. And he had no idea what Dan had done to the shish kabobs to make them so mouthwateringly good. (Marinaded 'em in ambrosia or something.)

Their host, however, was looking a bit peaked after working the grill for a few hours in the sun. Darien walked up to the heavyset man. "Dan, lemme take over for a bit here. Take a break. Enjoy the barbecue for a while. I may not be a chef, but I know my way around a grill."

Dan comically sized him up, then handed over his spatula and tongs. "All right, Darien. I'm trusting you with these." They both laughed as Darien accepted the utensils and honorary apron.

"I'll do ya proud, man." As Dan ambled away Darien assessed the meat left in his care, then looked around. "Okay, who's hungry?"

Never had to call Jack to the grill a second time, particularly if he wasn't the one behind the tongs.

Tossing the glove and ball to the young man he was playing catch with, the general closed the gap and clapped the youth on the shoulder, the pair ducking their heads with parted words before Jack begin to make his way back towards the main fare. He had to dodge the gallumphing puppies, followed on their tails (literally) by small children, stopping short to let them pass as they had 'right of way'.

Ah, nothing like kids that give a feeling that everything can actually be right with the world for a moment. Of course, it was times like these when he missed his own... but now wasn't a time to wallow. He knew Sara was safe, albeit elsewhere ( ... )

Sam's head came up as she heard a familiar voice call her name. O'Neill was at the BBQ... which was almost as predictable as seeing him with kids and dogs. She had to grin.

Drawing her hands from her pockets, she made her way through the crowds towards him. "Sir," she greeted him lightly, looking then to Darien, who stood behind the grill. "Hi," she smiled. "Meat's ready?"

Always a good thing. Vegetarian, Sam was not. There were days cows simply had to die... Today, evidently, was one of them.

This was what survival was all about, Ami decided as she wandered among her fellow colonists, greeting those that she knew; surprisingly, or maybe not so surprisingly, children she knew outnumbered adults. While she could be a surprisingly good cook with a functional kitchen and a recipe book, improvisation wasn't her finest skill. However, she had the pleasure of working, however briefly, with Molly Green and discovering native plants that could stretch out her tea supply ( ... )

"Do you believe that two large baskets of fruit will suffice, Daniel? It does not seem enough to feed a crowd of this size."

Daniel hefted the basket in his arms and glanced at the woman walking beside him. "You're not feeding the entire crowd. What you're bringing - "

"We are bringing. You helped me to gather it. It is only fair that you share the credit."

"What we're bringing," Daniel corrected himself, earning a gentle smile from his companion, "Is only meant to supplement the meal. There'll be plenty of food."

"I am afraid that I am merely going through the motions. I do not quite understand the meaning behind this . . . potluck"Well, you see a pot -" Daniel stopped a glanced at her again. Though her face was neutral, there was a mischeivous glint in her eyes. "You're messing with me ( ... )

As Sam made her way towards the grill, Jack reached over to pull the skewered meat off and hand it to her, juices dripping just the way they should be-- down the stick. His own request was only now being put on, the hissing of the fat as it met hot grill a sound that was hardcoded into his psyche... for every man, it was music... what Beethoven must have heard when he created his most successful... whatever that was. 9th? 10th? 5th? symphony ( ... )

"Thanks." Sam took the dripping skewer from Jack with a smile, inverting it so that the excess juice dripped onto the grass and not all over her fingers. "Smells great."

She started to suck on the end piece of meat, a fingertip against the end of the skewer, when the others approached. "Tastes pretty good, too," she added, licking her lips to clean them. Straightening some -- it's impossible to eat a dripping skewer standing entirely erect -- she flashed a smile at the newcomers. "Welcome to the party."

"Jealous?" Daniel threw back at Jack. He winked at Teyla who affected the very earthly response of rolling her eyes. That response made Daniel grin and he offered greetings to Ami and Maureen; the former smiled demurely while the latter gave him a lascivious look that made his face warm.

"Hey Sam," Daniel looked away from Maureen to his former teammate who did her best to maintain dignity while eating skewered meat. The score was currently Meat - 1, Sam - 0.

"I would much like to partake of … barbeque," Teyla gave that polite inclination of her head. With a smile at Jack and Sam, she glided around them and after carefully selecting a skewer, placed it on the grill with a demure smile of her own at Darien. "I would prefer it rare, please."

"So, Jack, did you get to add your secret ingredient?" Daniel asked.

Ami looked up, "You have a secret ingredient, General? What would that be?"

Daniel made a tsking sound. "You should know better. If he told you, it wouldn't be secret anymore."
