Sally Brookfield's cooking was legendary. The first bite of her cornbread more than confirmed the woman's status in Darien's mind. And he had no idea what Dan had done to the shish kabobs to make them so mouthwateringly good. (Marinaded 'em in ambrosia or something.)

Their host, however, was looking a bit peaked after working the grill for a few hours in the sun. Darien walked up to the heavyset man. "Dan, lemme take over for a bit here. Take a break. Enjoy the barbecue for a while. I may not be a chef, but I know my way around a grill."

Dan comically sized him up, then handed over his spatula and tongs. "All right, Darien. I'm trusting you with these." They both laughed as Darien accepted the utensils and honorary apron.

"I'll do ya proud, man." As Dan ambled away Darien assessed the meat left in his care, then looked around. "Okay, who's hungry?"

Never had to call Jack to the grill a second time, particularly if he wasn't the one behind the tongs.

Tossing the glove and ball to the young man he was playing catch with, the general closed the gap and clapped the youth on the shoulder, the pair ducking their heads with parted words before Jack begin to make his way back towards the main fare. He had to dodge the gallumphing puppies, followed on their tails (literally) by small children, stopping short to let them pass as they had 'right of way'.

Ah, nothing like kids that give a feeling that everything can actually be right with the world for a moment. Of course, it was times like these when he missed his own... but now wasn't a time to wallow. He knew Sara was safe, albeit elsewhere ( ... )

Sam's head came up as she heard a familiar voice call her name. O'Neill was at the BBQ... which was almost as predictable as seeing him with kids and dogs. She had to grin.

Drawing her hands from her pockets, she made her way through the crowds towards him. "Sir," she greeted him lightly, looking then to Darien, who stood behind the grill. "Hi," she smiled. "Meat's ready?"

Always a good thing. Vegetarian, Sam was not. There were days cows simply had to die... Today, evidently, was one of them.

This was what survival was all about, Ami decided as she wandered among her fellow colonists, greeting those that she knew; surprisingly, or maybe not so surprisingly, children she knew outnumbered adults. While she could be a surprisingly good cook with a functional kitchen and a recipe book, improvisation wasn't her finest skill. However, she had the pleasure of working, however briefly, with Molly Green and discovering native plants that could stretch out her tea supply ( ... )
