Ron sat quietly by the fire, feeding it to keep the wildlife away, but otensibly on guard duty. ~Do you think we'll find any other survivors, Lan?~

~No. Or if we do, we may have more to fear of them than they of us. Plus we would have no way of knowing if they are infiltrators, or true survivors.~

~True.~ Ron poked a bit at the fire with his twig, then threw it on the fire and rose. Time to check the permeter, again.

~I'm just worried that there're survivors and we'll miss them if we're not spread out enough. We saw it on Firaxia, remember? Those poor souls that starved to death and all because we didn't get there quickly enough.~

~Ronald, the situation is different here. You should not let your worries gain the upper hand.~

~I know. But you understand my reasons.~

~Of course.~

The two of them walked silently through the encampment and Ron offered a smile to Teyla as he passed. "Can't sleep?"

Teyla heard the ground crunch beneath the press of booted feet. She did not open her eyes, but her senses sharpened, registering the approach of another. Not that she expected to be alone; if she desired such she would have been inside of the tent instead of outside.

"Can't sleep?" Teyla recognized the accented voice as belonging to Captain Boone.

Opening her eyes, Teyla returned his smile with an easy one of her own. "I find that a bit of meditation helps me to relax my mind before pursuing sleep. Also, despite our reason for being here, it is quite peaceful. I am enjoying it."

The interior of the tent was warm and stuffy. Vivian looked forward to getting out and enjoying the cooler night air. But not just yet. She and James were on different teams but this joint mission had provided an opportunity to share a tent ( ... )

Ami looked up briefly from her work as Vivian Wu appeared, looking refreshed and not at all like a woman who'd just been quietly, but completely shagged. Even without "peeking" inside the brains of those she was "stationed" off-world with, there were certain emotions that simply couldn't be hidden. Of course, normally Ami ignored them as best she could, shielding against the distraction, but she couldn't afford - the teams couldn't afford - for her to do such a thing out here.

(I just hope that doesn't become regular, or that our teams aren't regularly together,) Ami thought, attention back on her work, mostly notes about Tau site and her brief observations of the Mayan and Aztec influence seen around the ziggarut. If Vivian and James kept that up, it might make for a bit of restlessness from the spillover ( ... )

Jack stood outside the circle of tents around the encampment. He couldn't sleep, and he wasn't in the mood to try to pretend he slept. Besides, Jack was still wondering whether what he'd seen pass in front of the moon had been as large as it had seemed to him. The odd shadows the clouds cast on the ground as they passed by the moon didn't help him search for a pterodactyl. He tried not to think about whether or not he was going to wish he had some dark chocolate on him before they left Tau. It made him think of things gone.

Jack closed his eyes for moment, closing out the disorienting shadows and listening to the night sounds. He caught Captain Boone asking someone if they couldn't sleep. Jack resisted the bark of bitter laughter the question threatened to draw from him. He tried to continue listening for something.

Jack listened as Teyla responded to Captain Boone's question. He was torn between being glad she was finding things peaceful, and his own fear of how suddenly that sense of peace could be shattered. Jack heard a third person join Captain Boone and Teyla. It took a moment to place the voice without looking, Vivian Wu. She was another part of Gamma Team 2. Apparently most of Captain Boone's team was restless. The only one he hadn't heard move about now was Darien Fawkes. They weren't his responsibility ( ... )

Jack's words got an immediate response. The sound made him go for his gun. He didn't have to see clearly what he'd attracted to know from the sound it was coming, and it had one thought -- how good he'd taste once it tore him open. The raptor had responded with a single low warning sound. Jack looked around desperately for any sign of exactly where it was coming from. He'd get one shot at the raptor before it was on top of him if he was lucky.

Suddenly Jack had his look. The raptor passed through a patch of moonlight. Jack could see it was old and unwelcome even amongst its own. Its hide was old and marked with scars from battles where its own had driven it away. Jack took his shot. It sounded terribly loud over Tau's low ground. It also sounded like it missed its mark. The next sound that was loud over Tau was Jack's scream when the raptor made sure he couldn't take another shot.

Ami Jackson might have had the advantage of a "headstart," but Teyla overtook the scientist easily. The moment the gunshot rang out, the Athosian sprang easily to her feet, tugging her weapon along with her. Her head turned toward the sound of gunfire, body following instinctively as she automatically brought the weapon to bear and her fingers lighted upon the trigger. Few, sometimes including Teyla herself, would ever believe that until a few years ago she'd neither seen nor used such a weapon.

Moonlight helped Teyla focus on the scene of battle. The beast which downed Captain Harkness was not overly large, but it was quick and fierce, marked with the scars of battle. Several quick shots into the air did not startle the beast, and Teyla changed positions.

The opening came swift and sure and she took advantage without hesitation, firing several rounds into the back of the creature upon Harkness, and never missing her mark.
