Chuck had assured Ellie he was fine with keeping an eye on the food if she went to go grab something. She still didn't take too long finding Serena, who had graciously handed over a bottle of champagne when she asked if she could have one. She figured they'd only use half and give back the rest - they didn't need much, just enough for the tradition of it all. If anything, it was more important than ever to do what they were doing. They were luckier than a lot of people were to still have each other.

She'd come back to the kitchen to find things still in order, and she put down the bottle on the counter and headed toward the fridge.

"I'm going to make salad," she announced, glancing over at him. "Everything cooking alright?"

"Nothing's boiling over, and there's no black smoke anywhere," Chuck said, looking pleased with himself, though he hadn't done much of anything, "That's a good sign, right?"

There was a reason that Ellie did most of the cooking every year. Chuck was really, really bad at it.

After a second of double checking to make sure that the food hadn't decided to spontaneously combust in the moment that he'd looked away to talk to his sister, Chuck noticed the bottle that she'd come back with.

"Hey-- where'd we get champagne?"

"Sounds like things are going good, then," she decided, as she pulled out what vegetables were available in excess, so she didn't leave the Compound with nothing picked. Glancing over her shoulder at the bottle, she said, "I ran down to see if Serena had any extra, and she did. She told me to tell you she said hello, by the way. I thought it'd be nice to have some, since we usually do at home."
