Ancients Behaving Badly...

HA! Ok, History Channel... we have a problem.
When your geeky looking fool of a psychiatrist claims that he's going to "Look to see if Alexander the Great was a military genius" - well, that shows to any real historian that perhaps you don't know what you're doing...

Darius is pronounced DA-RYE-US not DARE-E-US, you uncultured THUDS!

Thank you- people *always* get this wrong, and it drives me nuts! (Granted that if someone's parents name them "Dare-e-us" then that becomes the pronunciation, in that case.

Oh this one kills me. It would be like pronouncing Napolean Neopolitan... it's just wrong.
And shows shoddy research.

Eh, knowing the Hitler Channel, they probably will have a gallon of ice cream trying to conquer Europe. :\

I have to confess to being an uncultured thud. No idea it was da-rye-us. (BTW, emphasis on middle syllable?)

Word. I also did not know that.

But me and the history channel got a divorce. I took up with National Geographic and I haven't looked back.

I saw that. You're much better off with NatGeo, IMO. You & History wanted different things from one another. You wanted actual historical-type shows, it wanted you to STFU & go with its somewhat shoddy programming. It wasn't meant to be.

That's not a good bet. You're clearly correct.

I've always thought it was Dare-e-us. I even named a cat Darius once. I miss that cat. You wouldn't have liked him.

If? If?!? IF?!?!?!?!?!?

Damn the History Channel!

(And if you really want to be a stickler, it should, in fact, be "DAH-RYOOSH." But then who speaks ancient Persian these days?)

I dod some poking around to make sure I wasn't talking bollocks, and it turns out I was. "DAH-RYOOSH" is the modern Farsi pronunciation, but the ancient Persian is transcribed as "Dārayavahuš," which would have been simplified over the centuries to the modern form (although since Persian cuneiform was not a particularly efficient or precise system, it could have been pronounced damn near any way that involved those particular consonants.)

You are correct, sir. I simply use what is the actual "englishization" of the name rather than the "300" verison.
