Sounds like an execution to me. Not sure how it could have been botched.

"Regardless of how you feel about the legality of the death penalty, it exists, it is used, and in some cases it is the only outcome that will ease the suffering of and/or bring justice to many of those affected by these crimes." That's exactly how I feel. No where botched is my personal verdict.

At the end of the day, if we've decided we're going to participate in the death of something, the manner of death we inflict is not about the dead thing; it's entirely about ourselves. I think this is why it affects readers differently, even in a group of people who think capital punishment is acceptable or desirable.

I fear cruel deaths when the person does not fully 'deserve' the excecution (their crimes are not heinous enough, or worse... they're not actually guilty of them).

But it seems to me that cruel and unusual punishment is more about the 'prison' phase (such as endless time in solitary, or torture techniques in interrogation), rather than the execution phase.

That's my brain talking. The heart says that asking anyone, even the state, to excute a person is a terrible thing. I don't disagree with it, but I would hate to be put in the position of having to do it.

So many mixed feelings...

As I said, execution is more for the victims and their families than the prisoner. It's a complicated issue and there's no easy answers on either side.
