The last time House had gotten drunk at the Winchester he'd ended up taking home a hot girl with good intentions but a serious lack of follow-through. This time it wasn't because he was expecting similar results, but rather for the simplest reason of all: His leg hurt ( Read more... )

"Granddaddy you're drunk," Delirium said, smiling as she came out with a plate of food for House. She knew he hated it, it was why she persisted with the name even after how long it had been since he had, had his hand in her sister's chest. Delirium brushed a kiss against his bristly cheek before moving away quickly and dropped into a seat beside him. "That's okay, I bring you burger."

House looked over at her and sighed. "So, what, you're a waitress now?"

"Only for you grandfather," Delirium said, smiling as she pushed the burger further in front of him and wiggled the plate back and forth. His face, his demeanour- he was in pain but Del had nothing on her to help. Except her hands but she could feed him and bring him alcohol and help him home and look after him like he had done for Death. "You're in pain."

"I'm always in pain," said House, and picked up the burger, taking a bite. It was good. Not that he thanked her or anything, but he was slightly less annoyed by her presence.

"And Helen thought I was going to win the award for island drunk," Nikola said looking over the man, taking . Nikola was observant, he had seen Helen with this man, a Doctor and wondered what it was exactly she saw in him. Exceptional mind perhaps? Or something else. Helen did have the worst taste in men (except for him of course.) "It's the middle of the day and you're drinking already. I know the island is dull but really?"

House looked up at the man. Vaguely familiar, but he had no idea who he was.

"Really," he repeated sarcastically. "Tell me, what's so different about two o'clock and five o'clock in this place?"

"Well, let's see it's about three hours apart and if you have a sundial then two o'clock appears on the second notch and five on the fifth. Simple mathematics really," Nikola replied sarcastically, sitting down with his own glass of wine opposite. "So, you're the illustrious Doctor House then? I was expecting someone..."

"... more sober, I take it," House said, and ran a finger over the rim of his glass idly. "So who are you anyway? The drunk-before-5pm police?"

Upon seeing a limping man on the cusp of losing his balance, Zhuge immediately moved to the man's side, wrapping an arm around the man's shoulders and nose wrinkling slightly from the heavy scent of alcohol. He was not unfamiliar with men who stole time away from their days to drink, who got lost in the haze and warmth that a shot or two would provide them, and as far as Zhuge was concerned, an adult's choices were his or her own to make.

But that didn't mean that he would have enjoyed watching the man make a faceplant into the dirt.

"Careful," he remarked, brow arching lightly. "It look like you need a map to find home."

House blinked in surprise at the stranger apparently trying to help him keep upright. He wasn't that drunk. Well. Quite that drunk.

"Nah," he said, "it's right there." And he pointed. You could actually see the edge of his hut around the big tree.

The fact that there wasn't too much of a slur to the man's words was encouraging. Perhaps the weakness that Zhuge had sensed in the step was for some other reason, rather than the alcohol, and with a small and apologetic smile, Zhuge stood to full height, gradually removing the physical support that he was trying to offer the other man.

"Do you need help in getting to house?" he asked still, figuring that there was nothing wrong with being gracious, even when the help wasn't necessarily anything of a dire need for the man.

"Probably," said House. "And you need help with your articles. What is it you actually speak? Mandarin? I can speak Mandarin when I'm sober."

Gwen's actually planning on having lunch at the Winchester, more than anything else, but seeing House standing just outside makes her pause. She's only met him the once but it was pleasant enough, as such things went. It's not in her nature not to stop and ask about him and, if he needs something to go fetch it for him.

"Are you all right? Need...anything?"

It took a second for House's eyes to focus on her. "Hey, it's you," he said. "Did you ever find out you have a kid hidden away?"

"Ah, yeah, been informed. Still not quite over it," Gwen says, and it's breezier than she actually feels. It's both easier and harder that she's met Nate now and she wants desperately just to forget that he's biologically her child.

"Are you sure you don't need something?"

"Uh..." He seemed to consider this for a moment. "You can make sure I make it to my house right over there without falling over."

Helen was on her way to pick up something from her hut when she passed by the Winchester and, along the way, Greg. He seemed...disoriented, somehow, and Helen frowned a bit as she drew closer.

"Greg? Is everything all right? You don't need me for anything, do you?"

She didn't believe he'd admit needing help, he was stubborn, but she had to offer.

"I don't know, are you going to pretend that I'm not drunk at 2pm and instead there's something sympathy-inducing wrong with me?" House asked her.

"I'm more concerned about the reasons behind the drinking," Helen said calmly, trying not to let it rile her. He had a foul temper, it was true, but Helen suspected it was to protect his own feelings. That, and she'd simply grown used to it. Her best friend was Nikola Tesla, after all.

"Are you in pain? More than usual?"

"Not anymore," House said with a hint of cheerfulness. "Well, I got it back down to usual levels. Also I'm not feeling as pissy."
