The last time House had gotten drunk at the Winchester he'd ended up taking home a hot girl with good intentions but a serious lack of follow-through. This time it wasn't because he was expecting similar results, but rather for the simplest reason of all: His leg hurt ( Read more... )

Helen was on her way to pick up something from her hut when she passed by the Winchester and, along the way, Greg. He seemed...disoriented, somehow, and Helen frowned a bit as she drew closer.

"Greg? Is everything all right? You don't need me for anything, do you?"

She didn't believe he'd admit needing help, he was stubborn, but she had to offer.

"I don't know, are you going to pretend that I'm not drunk at 2pm and instead there's something sympathy-inducing wrong with me?" House asked her.

"I'm more concerned about the reasons behind the drinking," Helen said calmly, trying not to let it rile her. He had a foul temper, it was true, but Helen suspected it was to protect his own feelings. That, and she'd simply grown used to it. Her best friend was Nikola Tesla, after all.

"Are you in pain? More than usual?"

"Not anymore," House said with a hint of cheerfulness. "Well, I got it back down to usual levels. Also I'm not feeling as pissy."

"Let me take you home, then. Nothing much I can do for inebriation, I'm afraid, but if you've still got any pain, I'll try to massage it out for you."

It was such a simple thing to offer and Helen wasn't sure whether or not it did much good on the island but the physician in her wouldn't allow her to stand idly by. Neither would the friend.

House smiled, just short of a leer. "Okay," he said. "Probably a good idea, make sure I don't fall over on the way there."

Helen huffed lightly but slid an arm around his waist.

"You can lean on me, then, and if anyone asks, I'll pretend I'm drunk and you can play sober. I'm sure we're good enough actors to make it pass, yes?"

"What, like I care if anyone here thinks I'm drunk?" House said with a derisive snort as they started off. "You're the politician now, not me. Hey, you know what six days ago?"

"Mmm, what's that?" Helen asked, keeping her steps slow as they walked the little way back to his place.

"Something I missed? Oh, Christ, I didn't miss your birthday, did I? If I did, I'm quite sorry. It wasn't intentional."

"No, my birthday was in... whenever that was. No, six days ago was the anniversary of when I landed her. Six years. Six goddamn years." He stumbled a little, leaning against her.

"Dear God, that long?" Helen asked, tone a little softer than it'd be before. The idea that she could potentially be stuck here as long as six years was utterly frightening; as wonderful as it was to have a life with Will, she had her work back home, her life, her sanctuaries.

"I'm sorry." It seemed such a stupid thing to say and yet, Helen couldn't help but offer it. "Wait for a moment and I'll open the door for us?"

House just nodded and leaned on his cane, watching her. He didn't hear barking inside... oh yeah, he'd let Fucker have the run of the place for a time.

Helen opened the door for them and waited, not sure if he'd need any more help to go the rest of the way. "Did you want to get in bed, then? I can help you in, if you need."

Maybe it was a bit much but this was something within her capacity, caring for him. She wasn't so good at the emotional bits.

House limped in, and dropped his cane to the floor with a loud clatter, sinking onto the bed. "Close the door," he said. "There's a chill." And patted the bed next to him.

Helen pushed the door shut and settled on the edge of the bed next to him. She waited for a few moments, quiet, before squeezing his shoulder lightly.

"Is it hard on you, then, being here so long?"

"Yes," said House. "I fucking hate this place." He turned his head to smell her hair and added, "Do I get a blow job now? Because that's what happened when I brought Kate home from the bar."
