Party in the Hidden Hamlet for Logan

Aug 08, 2011 05:10

It was no secret that Jack had been planning a party for Logan. He'd made all the arrangements, had gotten a cake and made sure there was liquor as well as sweet talking some other food out of Helen. Maybe not sweet talking so much as just asking, but Jack liked to think he was still as charming as ever. He'd gotten everything set up in the common ( Read more... )

When Logan had finally caught on to what Jack was up to, he'd nearly told the other man not to bother. He didn't know how to explain to Jack that people generally just didn't like him. He wasn't loved the way Jack was. He had a few people in his life, but the only time he'd ever really attracted the attention of others was when he was making trouble or pissing people off.

Jack had clearly put a lot of effort into it though, and he had always wanted a birthday party on the island. After all, everyone else seemed to have them. And in the end he kept his mouth shut and decided to let it happen.

It was early and a few people were already arriving. Logan made no move to greet them though. For all it was his party, he was still convinced that most people would only turn up to see Jack.

"You're getting fucking old," Joe said, when he found Logan, smirking a little as he leaned against a nearby tree. "Soon you're gonna be in the same boat as me, half-deaf, with bad fucking knees and a sore back most of the time."

Of all those things, Joe was only half-deaf, but he couldn't pass up the opportunity to give Logan a hard time about getting older.

"Happy Birthday," he added after a second, still grinning.

Logan wrinkled his nose and offered a small smile. "I'm not that old, man," he insisted with a grin, pushing his short hair back so it stood up on end.

"Thanks for coming or whatever," he added, knowing that was the polite thing to say. "I was kind of worried no one would bother turning up. Last thing I want is for Jack to realize he married a social reject," he quipped- though he was only half-kidding.

"Pretty sure that isn't the fucking case, old man," Joe answered, reaching over to cuff the back of Logan's head affectionately. "There's fucking cake and food and booze. We should party."

With cake, of course, as tempting as the alcohol still was. Joe tended to stay away from most parties now because of it, but there was no way in hell he'd miss Logan's birthday. He could deal with it for the night.

Jack was making the most of his duties as host. He kept checking the food and drinks, was on top of the record player, switching out music without any care as to whether it was Benny Goodman, Sex Pistols, or Cindy Lauper. He played with Matthew a bit and when he was sure Neil wasn't looking he gave Mack and Flo another cookie each. They were beautiful little girls and he couldn't help but spoil them a little.

He was so busy trying to make sure things went smoothly that it would seem he didn't have enough time to talk, but Jack made time for everyone.

"I think it turned out well," Saffron said, coming up beside Jack. She'd done what she could to help, making up all kinds of food with assistance from Bill. Slipping her arm through Jack's, she surveyed the small crowd with a satisfied smile. "Think Logan's having a good time?"

"Oh, I hope so," he said softly. "He's not the biggest fan of parties in general but I hoped he'd like this. I think every year he's been here he's just gone off by himself and gotten stoned because no one did anything for him."

He kept his voice low because it was dangerously close to being gossip, but this was Helen and he told her...well, not everything, but a lot.

"Well," Saffron replied, her voice pitched low to match Jack's, "this can be the first year of a new tradition for him. No more birthdays alone and without a party."

Kon always loved a party. He loved a party especially when he wasn't in the best mood and, with Tim vanished for the second time, he wasn't really in a good mood. But he'd always been able to fake it, so when he found out about Logan's birthday, he was there. He knew what he wanted to do for Logan's birthday, but he wasn't sure how to do it or even who could. Maybe he'd stop Jack and ask him. He'd probably know someone.

He looked around and saw a few people he knew. Neil. Helen. ...Savannah?

"Kon! Hi!" Savannah said cheerfully. She had to turn to face him completely and the shape of her body in the rather flattering maternity dress was distinctly unlike it had been for the past few months of how she'd looked in baggy clothes and flowing sundresses.

She looked pregnant.

"Oh! It's so good you came. Come over here and have some cake."

Kon did come over, but he didn't look at the cake. Instead, he was looking her stomach. Staring at it, really. "When did...how did...who?!" His eyes shot back up to her face and he shot her an accusing glare. She hadn't told him she was pregnant?

She was serene under his gaze and his words didn't upset her at all. She only rubbed her hand across her stomach.

"Oh, don't worry about all that," she said lightly. "Come on. Helen made the cake and it's just so good."
