As far as birthdays went, this had turned out to be an eventful one. I wasn't really used to doing much for my birthday, close to Christmas as it was, and here on the island I wasn't even sure if anyone knew it was my birthday. I hadn't told Savannah, who probably would have at least given me a card for the big 1-9 (2-1? Was I counting physical ( Read more... )

Raylan's pretty much over the snow at this point. He'd liked Miami for a reason; sunny, hot and none of this snow shit. He's sick of his boots trying to be damp. Still, he's had time to thaw through and grab a coffee by the time he catches sight of Peter.

"What's up, man?" he asks, dropping down into an available chair. "Did you say it was your birthday?"

Raylan was one of the people on the island that I got along with well enough to consider a friend and I managed half a smile before sinking back into my sulk about the whole situation. Yeah, it was a sulk, and I wasn't ashamed to admit that.

"Yeah, it is. I guess I'm twenty one today. I thought it'd be a lot more exciting but when the only person who knows it is kind of not speaking to you, well."

Peter's awfully young yet and Raylan's amused to see the temper that he's settled into. He does his best to keep it covered though.

"Well, Happy Birthday," he says, smiling easily. "We've gotta do somethin' to celebrate."

"I guess with it being twenty one, alcohol's going to be involved?"

I don't think I'd mind getting drunk, even though I had never really had an interest in it. Maybe we could go to the strip club and make a day of it.

Sally shivered at the word upon the first hearing of it and stared at the offending party who even dared to say it. "Don't..." She held up a hand to try and calm herself. "Don't go saying words like that where people can hear you!" she hissed. "You're going to cause a panic attack!"

"Happy Birthday?" I asked, a little confused as to why something like that was going to cause mass panic. Then again, there were some weird people on the island and maybe she was from a place where they didn't celebrate birthdays.

"They're not going to come and take me to the Sleepshop, are they?"

"No, but you may be beaten by ageing women who have decided to declare holy war against birthdays," Sally replied, not saying whether or not she had decided to join that cult.

The truth was, she just wasn't sure she wanted to exert the potential wrinkles that went along with it. "...the sleepshop?"

"...Logan's Run?" I offered, trying to see if she'd get the reference. "Sci fi flick? Basically, the world is overpopulated so they kill everyone when they turn 21 in these giant factories?"

It had seemed like a cool reference at the time.

"Not really," I said, trying to put on a good face for Helena. I was in a piss-poor mood, it was true, but she was a friend and I couldn't have too many of those. "It seems hell bent on reminding me that it's my birthday."

I couldn't help but laugh at that and I turned toward the bookshelves.

"Hear that? No more birthday bullshit. Not today."

That at least got me in a better mood. "Thanks, for that. Otherwise I think I'd still be moping."
