"Not really," I said, trying to put on a good face for Helena. I was in a piss-poor mood, it was true, but she was a friend and I couldn't have too many of those. "It seems hell bent on reminding me that it's my birthday."

I couldn't help but laugh at that and I turned toward the bookshelves.

"Hear that? No more birthday bullshit. Not today."

That at least got me in a better mood. "Thanks, for that. Otherwise I think I'd still be moping."

"Well, I wouldn't say no," I admitted, laughing a little. "I don't think you'd mock me with it. Still, it hasn't been the best of birthdays."

"Uh huh. Not so sure how much I trust that," I teased, amused if nothing else. "So. How do you celebrate birthdays in the circus? Private show or something?"

"I could go for ice cream," I admitted. "Too bad there's not any...unless you want to risk getting some snow and putting sugar in it? I used to do that when we went skiing and my mom always yelled at me."

I could go for hot chocolate myself. That had always been one of the better parts of skiing, in my opinion, and I was happy to give into cliche this time around.

"You want to go see if the kitchen will oblige us? I think I saw some chocolate in there."

"I agree," I said, following. "I don't think a place that turns into something out of a greeting card could be completely devoid of everything good and Christmas like. Doesn't seem right."

"You seem to have better luck with it than I do," I mused. "Is that because you're a girl? Or because I'm just useless when it comes to sentient bookshelves? Not exactly a skill I picked up back home."
