It was probably the height of ridiculousness to drag an armful of books and a blanket down to the beach especially when she'd have to carry it all back, but Cissie was determined to do her research out in the fresh air

"Because a bow is so much cooler?" Cassie said as she plopped down next to Cissie and Iris greeted Cissie with a quick lick on the hand. "Whatca doing?"
Cissie snorted at that as she leaned over to give Iris some heavy-duty scratchings behind the ear. "Yeah, when you don't have to lug it around and hope to god your mother didn't put in the stupid perfume arrows."
"I was just trying to figure out how I could make some new arrows. We've got the wood here, that's about it."
"Hey, you saw the original costume, right? I don't even want to know what she was on to think that was a good idea."
Cissie leaned over to see which book Cassie had. "Feathers. Something to stick them on. Someway to carve the arrows and get the right shape. What I really want is to make more grappling arrows and stuff like that, but that'll never happen."
"They're certainly a lot less fuss then arrows," Cissie agreed as she looked up, shading her eyes against the sun. Upon seeing Luke, she waved in greeting, very much noting the new equipment.
"Nice bow," she said, eying it critically. "Where did you find that?"
"I am very impressed," Cissie said. She was, too - it couldn't have been easy getting all the materials and putting it all together. All the time in the world didn't necessarily mean a thing if you weren't skilled enough.
"I did a little fencing, which really isn't the same thing I know, but that's as far as my sword-fighting abilities go. I have to admit to preferring archery over everything, myself. I could always put something where I wanted it to go."
"Good question," Alex said, only distantly aware that she was probably interrupting something. She hadn't meant to overhear, but in walking along the beach, where she had a tendency to spend a good deal of her time, there was no missing the girl's reaction to whatever she was reading. "Is that what the book's about?"
"No, actually." Cissie looked up sheepishly, hoping the girl didn't think she was completely crazy for talking to herself out loud. "It's about archery, actually. My mom was kind of an archery buff and she passed it on to me. Which is cool and all, but I was wanting to make more arrows and that's gonna be hard."
"Yeah, I guess it would be, here," Alex agreed, though truthfully, she suspected that, with enough time, she might have been able to manage it. Her weapon of choice had always been a slingshot, but there'd been arrows on the island, the one she had lived on before this; that just wasn't anything she could talk about. "That does sound pretty cool, though. I'm pretty sure there are targets somewhere, maybe someone who uses them knows how to make good arrows?"
"There's an archery butt over on the other side," Cissie said, gesturing vaguely in its direction. "I go out there and practice nearly every day, but I haven't seen anyone else. But you're right, there's got to be someone who can at least help."
She closed the book she'd been looking at and tossed it over to the side with a smile. "I'm Cissie, by the way."
Sonya figured the question was hypothetical, but she couldn't help responding.
"Lack of a good swordsmith, maybe."
Tomorrow would be the December first, and if it was going to be anything like last year, Sonya using the time to go for a swim-or rather just coming in from one. Over the black one-piece (the box was generous), she wrapped a towel around her waist to keep from dripping everywhere.
Seeing young women talk about weapons wasn't so unusual anymore, not after being on the island for this long. It was more novel was that she was talking about it as a 'family trade'.
Cissie snorted in amusement and looked up, closing the book. "There's a thought. I was just trying to figure out how to make some more arrows but it seems a lot more complicated than I thought it would be."
At least she had the time if it came to that - it wasn't as if she was going anywhere.
"That all?" It had been awhile since Sonya had used her bow, but it was nice to meet someone with the same interest.
She laid the towel out and took a seet. "There's a supply of obsidian near the volcano, they can be fashioned into arrowheads. Rawhide or leather to attach them, and I've some extra feathers you could use."
Some women talked about clothing in great detail, Sonya on the other hand felt that same interest when talking about and discussing weapons.
Sonya could spare some supplies anyway. With the winter coming about, spears were more effective against big game than arrows anyway.
Cissie beamed at the offer. "Really? You wouldn't mind? That's great! Thank you so much. I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what to do. I don't know if I'll need them or anything, but it's good to be prepared, you know. Just in case."
A fellow archer. It was so nice to finally meet one who wasn't her mother and/or crazy. "I'm Cissie, by the way."

"Perfume arrows? Seriously? Your mom is so weird..." And once again Cassie was grateful for her own mother.
Considering this, Cassie picked up one of the books and leafed through it. "Well, what else do you need?"
