For awhile there, I hadn't been sure whether I would ever get this dance hosted, and it was gratifying to be able to stand aside and take the whole thing in. Considering what we had to work with, I thought we'd done a really great job in transforming the gym into a twinkling undersea wonderland.

I didn't have a date, but that was a much my own fault as anyone else's. I didn't mind it, told myself it was better that way, and pragmatically it absolutely was. It was difficult to not miss George during something like this. He'd loved to dance.

Still, I was footloose and looking fabulous, having snagged a gorgeous, pale blue dress from the box several weeks before. Now it was just a matter of putting it to good use.

A week and change under his belt and nothing's quite settled, but Raylan's accept that he's staying. It's something. He heard about the party, and he figured that it couldn't hurt. And the scenery is sort of glorious, if a little different to what he's used to.

"That's a helluva dress, Shari," he says, touching the brim of his hat and raising his glass in a lazy toast.

"I'm going to assume that's a compliment," I replied as I glanced down at my dress, flipping my hands against the frothy skirt. Despite not knowing Raylan all that well yet, I honestly couldn't imagine him meaning it any other way.

"Nice hat," I offered in return, my smile a little bewildered. "I'm not sure it suits the theme, but it definitely suits you."

"It was meant as a compliement," he says with an easy grin, walking closer. He remembers his Mom wearing dressers like that, sometimes, on a good night with Arlo. Never quite in that shade though.

"It's a new hat," says Raylan, and his expression shows what he thinks of that. "But I feel kinda naked without it."

Jo liked parties, so she was certainly not going to miss this one. A pleasant few hours spent with the clothes box and a mirror had ended up with her wearing a blue floaty dress. It ended above her knees at the front, but hung down at the back, which was as close to dressing as a mermaid as she could get and still be able to dance, since it was a Dance.

Some of the decorations looked beautifully sea-like and she was trying to see if it was the same colour as her dress when she pulled just a bit too hard and it came off the wall.

"Whoops!" she said, cheerfully and pulled over a chair to stand on to stick it back up. Which might not have been the best idea in heels, since chairs aren't known for being particularly stable when you stand on them and lean over.

Gilderoy, not to be outdone by his amazing decorations, had of course toiled away on a costume once the decorations were completed. He'd envisioned a awe-inspiring theme-appropriate design which wouldn't be as magical as it would have been back home, but one had to make sacrifices sometimes, especially living on Tabula Rosa ( ... )

"Nice costume," Joey spoke by way of greeting, not at all sure what he was looking at but definitely sure he didn't like it. His roommate was Weird with a capital W and he was also pretty sure he was Gay with a capital G.

He munched on a snack, coming to stand by Gilderoy's shoulder and looking around. "Very uh..." What was the word? His attention turned to the costume once again. Oh! "....Girly."

"Thank you," Gilderoy replied with a smile. He couldn't quite make out the second word that Joey used to describe the costume. Right at the moment he'd said girly, Gilderoy had been distracted by a someone else having a good time.

"Gildy?" he asks. "I really prefer Gilderoy, but I supposed it's as good an adjective as any to describe something made by me."

"Joey," Joey corrected, chucking a thumb back at himself. He wasn't really surprised that Gilderoy would forget his name; the man was always so distracted by things that Joey found it hard to hold his attention most of the time.

"So, um...I figure we should, y'know, bond some more. Uh..." May as well start on a topic Joey was an expert on. "Slept with any hot women latey? Unless you're...you know..." As gay as a rainbow unicorn.

The bigger her bump gets, the harder it is to find a pretty dress (God only knows what it's going to be like when she's 8 months gone instead of four) but she's found a green dress with a broad, gold ribbon under her bust and she's wearing her hair swept up, 50s style.

She feels pretty, and that's really all that counts.
Especially if she's got to drink fruit juice all night.

"You," Bill said, coming up next to Charlie, "look gorgeous." There was a pack of cigarettes rolled up in one sleeve of his tight black t-shirt, but it was just a prop. "In fact, I think you might be glowing."

"Bill, you know I'm a married lady. Flattery's gonna get you nowhere." She does grin though, reaching out to smooth his white t-shirt. "You don't look so bad yourself, Mister."

Bill grinned even wider at that, slipping his thumbs into his belt loops. "Are you telling me married ladies don't need to be complimented any longer?" he teased. "Here I thought all women wanted to be told they look good. And thanks. Getting ready for this was a fair sight easier than getting dressed for drag night at the club, that's for sure."

Slowly and methodically, Karen is trying all of the food. She's wearing a glittery dress and fairy wings, she's got Puss Cat trailing from under one arm, and she's got a cake in one hand. Shadow and Rollie said she could come as long as she went home before her bed-time, but one of them will come get her so she can say good night to Josie.

For now, though, the cake is very good.
She absently picks up another one and puts it into the pocket of her dress.

"Careful you don't make yourself sick," Edmund advised, coming up behind Karen just as he saw her slip a treat away. "You can have sweets any day. No need to eat them all up now."

"I'm just trying a little bit of everything," says Karen, slipping her free hand into Edmund's without thinking about it. "Not enough to make myself sick, I promise. I hate being sick. It's yucky, isn't it?"

"Very yucky," he agreed solemnly. "Are you just going to eat or are you going to dance too?"
