Council Election Party

May 31, 2010 12:37

It was always a good day when the democratic process had been carried out without a hitch, and this day was no exception. The results of the latest Island Council election were in, and it was time to celebrate, not only the results, but the process itself. And given the number of hardships they endured on the island, a celebration was something ( Read more... )

Okay, I admit it: I was proud of myself. Somewhere along the line, I'd grown from flaky ex-dead girl to a genuinely responsible adult. People actually trusted my judgment enough to vote for it. As early as six months before, I would have wondered at their sanity, but now I actually felt like I could do it. Like this was totally the right thing for me to be doing.

Seeing as how the party was generally as much outside as in, I didn't wear anything fancy; just a cute little sun dress. I'd put my hair up, and the breeze felt great against the back of my neck. Circulating through the crowd, for once it seemed like things were actually going to be okay.

Sonya only attended to celebrate the election, a few of the chosen candidates being some that she'd voted for herself. Still, the crowd was making her tense and suddenly wish for a smaller turn-out.

She was glad that when she finally spotted Shari, she was outside. Being outdoors in such a crowd seemed more tolerable than indoors.

"Congratulations." She said, walking over to her. The party wasn't formal enough for her to even wear a dress, but she felt it warranted a nice blouse and trousers (the sleeves were shear enough but the rest of the garment wasn't see-through and thus able to cover the tatoo on her shoulder).

Turning at the voice, I smiled. "Hey, thanks," I replied, and then motioned to Sonya. "You look really nice." To my knowledge, she didn't dress up much, so it was definitely worth remarking on even if it wasn't the traditional type girly dress.

"Thanks, it's not dress greens, but I've gone this long without wearing them." Even though dress greens would've been more appropriate, considering the 'holiday'.

"You raised some good points in your speech, about kids on the island and the need for school." Sonya wasn't all that great with kids, but that wasn't to say she didn't consider what they needed.

Sarah had made only a brief pitstop before arriving at the party, knowing that she's dressed for it and needs to make her appearance. Her heart still feels like it's pounding and for the next twenty-four to who-knows-when hours, she needs to be watching the reparation process and see what Gaius does, who he turns to for advice, and all the things she needs to keep an eye on in the future.

She clears her throat as she smooths down the dress and takes another look for stray leaves, only finding one when she reaches back into her pinned-up hair. Taking it out, she studies the wayward foliage for only a moment before letting it tumble to the ground.

By the time of the next election, Bill's tenure as the council representative for the kitchen would be up, and he wasn't sure yet whether he'd be sad or relieved by the loss of responsibility. Tonight, though, he was still a council rep, and this party was for the five people who'd been elected to serve in the new term.

Bill was mingling outside for the most part, enjoying the mild weather and venturing occasionally into the Hub for a refill on his drink. He was never really inclined to attempt karaoke, but maybe tonight would be different. After all, Bill never shied away from making a fool of himself.

If there was just one person at the party that Abby always had to say hello to, it was Bill, and not just because he was her very close friend with excellent benefits. That was part of it, of course, but not all of it.

"Hey stranger," she greeted him as she slid up next to him at the bar, leaning against it idly and giving him the corniest come hither look she could manage. "Come here often?"

Always glad to see Abby, playing along by giving her a large and cheesy grin. "Well, gorgeous, if you do I'm definitely going to start," he replied with an exaggerated wink. "Can I buy you a drink?"

The grin and wink nearly made her gigglefit and ruin the charade, but she managed to hold it together enough to respond.

"I suppose I could let you do that," she replied in an overly sultry voice that kind of sounded like she had a head cold or strep throat. "What's your pleasure?"

What had seemed like a good idea so long ago is beginning to grow on my nerves. With a light scratch to my ever-growing beard, I know that the heat and humidity are making it clearly intolerable and that for all my grieving I might have done with this silly act, it's almost over. In a deep-blue shirt and pair of dark denims, I'm cradling a drink in my hands and not trying to knock it back too-quickly.

After all, it's not like I need to add 'abuse of alcohol' to my list of issues.

"Hey, Webster," Stacy said, stepping up beside him, close enough that their shoulders unintentionally brush. She didn't seem to notice. In her little black dress and silver flats, she seemed even tinier than usual, her hair tumbling messily around her face and her eyes bright from the drink someone had pressed into her hand.

I turn to her, giving her a slightly concerned look when I see the drink, but any comments about drinking from me would be hypocritical at best, so I let it all slide away and offer her a smile. "Stacy," I greet. "You look stunning. Sometimes I think that these parties are just made for all the beautiful women here to make us men feel worthless in comparison."

"Is it working?" she grinned, twisting just enough to swish her skirt, and for those handful of moments she was playful and knowing until something distracted her.

Abruptly, she reached up a hand to touch his bearded cheek and said, "This is new."

Of all the things he's seen on the Island, the Council is one of the few that gives him the good kind of hope that he likes to experience. A responsible governing body that takes care of things? Hell, it's enough for him to attend the party and the drinks are enough to make him stay. He's made sure to get himself a glass of bourbon and has pried himself away from his current work (which involves a broad-spectrum antibiotic harvested from only island-made materials) and has told himself that tonight, he has to enjoy himself for a least a good minute.

"Bones!"

He's barely limping anymore, although his ankle still needs to be favoured, from time to time. Still, few people love a party as much as James T. Kirk, and he's intending to enjoy himself as much as he can. Hell, he's planning on needing to be poured into bed. He's making a good start.

"Smiling wouldn't kill you, you know!"

McCoy isn't sure why he's surprised when he turns and sees Jim look like he picked a fight with a door and a wall and managed to come out the loser. "Maybe not, but whatever got you during the first round might. Damn it, Jim, what the hell did you do to yourself and why didn't you come see me sooner?" Those bruises aren't exactly brand new looking.

"I meant to," says Jim, holding up one finger. "I definitely meant to, but, you know, I woke up the next morning and it didn't really hurt as much and Reid had sort of calmed down."

He shrugs.

"It was only a little fall, Bones. Barely anything."
