Throwing a party was a lot more work than Logan had anticipated, and he found himself grateful for a change that Jack had so many friends. Decorating wasn't so bad, and it went by faster with the help of Prior and Maureen, but food... Well, anyone who had ever tasted Logan's attempts at anything other than pancakes or bacon would be glad to know

"I love you for this," he said, just loud enough for Logan to hear. "I love you for a lot of reasons, but this is fantastic. Thank you."

"It's not a big deal," he assured the other man. "I just wanted to do something for you. Four years is a long time- and I like reminding you how old you are," he teased.

"Don't even pretend you don't like it. And yours will be here soon enough. You're getting older, too."

But Jack was a friend, who'd helped me build the doghouse for Mrs. O'Leary. I felt I owed it to him to show up.
And I hoped Annabeth could come too. Not just because I could use the friendly company. Yeah. What with her plans to build her own hut, perhaps a conversation with Jack and the building crew was in order. I should probably introduce her to him...
...though I wondered if that was a good idea.

It was weird for her, being on the island. For a long while back home, it seemed as though her life had been completely intertwined with Percy's. Here, he had his own sets of friends and his own activities and habits, and she almost felt like a stranger.
Not to mention the fact that there was so much he didn't know, things she wanted to tell him but couldn't. Knowing the future was never a good thing - but for people like him, especially. Percy would try to change future, if he could.
No need to tell him how many casualties they'd had, either.
Annabeth is different but she pretends otherwise, casting a surveying glance at the people milling about.

"He's a friend of practically everybody, as far as I can tell," I said. "He seemed to have an interesting life before he came here, too; a lot of space travel; I think he's something of an agent. Anyway, he helped build Mrs. O'Leary's doghouse. He's pretty active in the building committee."

Annabeth perked up at the mention of 'building committee', having finished her blueprint the other day. It was nothing extravagant, but it was functional and looked pretty good too, in her opinion. "Which one is he?"
A thought came to mind and she pulled him aside, leaning in to mutter quietly, so only he could hear. "How many people have you told about us being demigods?"

I grabbed my glass of mango juice from the bar, and smiled as I looked out towards the crowd.

"Hello, beautiful," he said with a dashing smile. "What's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?"

I managed to compose myself quickly. "Wishing a good friend a very happy birthday," I said, raising my glass.

Clearly not.
He circulated through the crowd, smiling at everyone and talking to them, offering his thanks for their coming. He loved parties, that was no secret. He kept sneaking glances at Logan all through the thing. No matter who he talked to or who he danced with, Jack knew who he needed to thank the most.

"Happy Birthday, Jack," he repeated the words off of the sign slowly, testing for flavor. "Jack who?"

"That suggests one needs an excuse for a party. I beg to differ."

"Where have you been hiding?" he asked warmly. "The parties here need more men like you around."
