Throwing a party was a lot more work than Logan had anticipated, and he found himself grateful for a change that Jack had so many friends. Decorating wasn't so bad, and it went by faster with the help of Prior and Maureen, but food... Well, anyone who had ever tasted Logan's attempts at anything other than pancakes or bacon would be glad to know ( Read more... )

A party would be just the thing to take my mind off... things. And it would be good to catch up with Jack once again. It had been too long since we'd talked. He'd been busy, as had I. Interesting that this was possible on an Island of only 400 people, but there you go.

I grabbed my glass of mango juice from the bar, and smiled as I looked out towards the crowd.

Jack was making his rounds and as he passed Polly he did a quick pivot, caught her around the waist, and planted a chaste kiss on her cheek.

"Hello, beautiful," he said with a dashing smile. "What's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?"

Either he was getting bolder, or I was getting more susceptible to his flirts, or both. I couldn't help laughing and I felt my cheeks blush. If he wasn't married...

I managed to compose myself quickly. "Wishing a good friend a very happy birthday," I said, raising my glass.

"Oh, well then...I guess we'll let you stick around," Jack teased. "Thank you for that. I'm really happy you came. Are you having a nice time?"

"I am, especially now," I said. Why shouldn't I flirt as well? Though I was but a novice compared to the master. "I haven't talked with you for a few months, now. What have you been doing in the interim?"

"I've been doing...nah, you really don't want to know," Jack grinned, looking over at Logan near their hut.

"Same old things, really. Task force, Helen's club. You know. I stay busy."

"Yeah, me too," I said. "Children's office, IPD, the preschool." I looked up at him. "Did the Island have any mischief with you since we last talked?"

"No, I think that might be one of the perks for being here so long. It's skipped over me. Unless something happened on Valentine's day, though I don't think I'd have noticed. Logan and I spent it together," he explained.

"Well, I ended up falling for a poor young man and chased him halfway across the Island the whole day," I said, grinning ruefully. "Poor Zell. He still gets uncomfortable whenever I see him. I'm afraid I may have scarred him for life."

"Oh, Zell. He's such a sweet guy. Shame on you, Polly," Jack teased. "What if you scarred him for life?"

"I don't know," I said, half-jokingly. "Some sort of penance? You recommend anything?"

"Hardly. I'm all for chasing and stealing kisses," he laughed. "As long as he's interested. Is he?"

"He broke speed records, Jack," I said, ruefully. "It was only thanks to the Island that I became freakishly able to find him."

"Speed records, huh? Then he's a little crazy, if you ask me. Any guy would be lucky to have you on his ass," he chuckled.

I paused. The image was disturbing and disturbingly compelling at the same time.

I knew what he was suggesting, and I couldn't help but think that he was a little crazy for it. "Jack? I'm not sure..." I bit my lip uncertainly.

"In general...or about Zell?" he asked, casually taking a sip of his juice.
