If you asked Ainsley if she expected this to be the general way her life went, she wouldn't have thought that she would up here in a clinic in the woods of a strange Island with a baby resting nearby, Josh still feeling freshly disappeared, and feeling weaker than she ever had before. She knew that the old adage ought to be true. Whatever didn't ( Read more... )

Karen's been spending a lot of time sitting in the clinic, quietly colouring, sitting there while Ainsley sleeps. Sometimes, Josie cries and Karen goes and strokes his little head. She's been to fetch some juice and, when she comes back into the clinic, Ainsley's awake and holding Josie.

"Hi," says Karen, softly. She's been praticing her quiet voice.

Ainsley looked over when she heard something. The last few days had been strange, filled with too many waking dreams and sounds mingling together, but she always recognized Karen's voice. "Hey, Karen," Ainsley greeted tiredly, adjusting Josiah in her arms as she gingerly walked back to the bed and sat down. It just wasn't any kind of right how she could be so exhausted when she hadn't done anything in a good time. "When did you come in?"

"I've been here for a bit, but I went to get a drink," says Karen, absently. Small children don't really have any concept of actual time and how it passes.

"How's Josie?"

"Josiah," Ainsley stressed because honestly, she didn't need her little boy having gender issues before he could even talk. She had to at least give him a few years before all of that came into play. "He's tired of playing second fiddle to sleep, I think," she admitted with a fond and tired smile. "Want to help me give him some attention?"

Abby had brought food, specifically blueberry cobbler. When there was a major family realignment event of any kind, the required thing was to bring food, even if the family already had food. Plus, Ainsley had just given birth and that took a lot of calories, so she needed cobbler to help her get her strength back.

She held the covered cobbler pan in one hand and gently knocked on the doorframe so she wouldn't interrupt the cute little family tableau currently occurring, but still would let Ainsley know someone was here.

Ainsley smiled tiredly as she heard a knock at the door, adjusting the baby in her arms as he gave a tiny sound as he was moved. "Don't mind me," she offered, inviting Abby in with a cant of her head. "I was just telling the little one here that we're going to stage a prison break one day soon. Come in, please!"

With permission given and family tableau over, she was willing to move into the room. She only bothered with tact some of the time, but this was a time.

"Darn, I wish I would have known you wanted to prison-break. I would have baked a file into this," she replied, lifting the cobbler a little in illustration.

"Although, what kind? Manila, maybe? It's sort of like vanilla, but not."

"Well, we can always work on distracting the guard later," Ainsley assured, grinning slightly at the thought of going to great lengths to organize a very efficient break-out of a very calm and easygoing clinic. "And right now, honestly, I don't even care what flavors are in there, I am starved and that looks incredible."

"Hey," Lennox said quietly, coming into the clinic. He'd heard a few days ago that Ainsley had given birth and, more importantly, that she and the baby were okay, but he'd wanted to give them both a few days to recover before coming to visit. Eventually, though, the pull of the baby proved to be too strong and here he was, standing in the doorway with a small smile.

Ainsley lit up when she heard a very familiar voice. She hadn't seen James in far too long and she turned, Josiah balanced carefully in her arms as she used his little hand to wave. "Well, hello, stranger," she said, using her adult voice in her continuing attempt to not devolve into constant baby-talk. She gingerly sat back down on the bed, still a little exhausted to be on her feet too long. "It's about time you came and saw the new recruit. I plan on turning him to Republicanism by the time he's twelve."

"And Uncle Lennox will be here at every turn to give him a dissenting opinion," he replied with a grin, coming into the room to meet the new baby. "Just to expand his mind, of course," he teased, coming closer to the bed. "So this is him, huh? Cute little guy."

"This is him," Ainsley agreed and groaned slightly as she got back into bed, trying not to think about how many parts were sore and why they were. That just led her mind down a road of ill thoughts. "Did you want to hold the little him?"
