Keller-Dex wedding

Feb 20, 2010 11:29

Jennifer had been looking forward to this day ever since Ronon's ever-so-casual proposal. It wasn't a huge, lavish wedding, like little girls dream about sometimes, but it was early evening on the beach and it was beautiful. The clothes box had been nice enough, after much sweet-talking and prodding, to supply Jennifer with a pretty dress and ( Read more... )

As much as she'd been looking forward to this, Jennifer was glad that the making-it-official part was out of the way and she could relax. She acquired a cup of something tropically fruity and took a few minutes to stop and say hi to their guests.

"Hey," Ronon said, kissing her cheek and wrapping an arm around her. "Dr. Keller-Dex." Their last names sounded awful together but saying it still made him smile.

"Hi." Jennifer kissed him back and tried not to giggle too much at her new name. It really did sound like some kind of nasty new drug, but she liked it anyway. "Husband of mine." A little sappy, maybe, but they were allowed on their wedding day, right?

"No-one elses," Ronon agreed. That was kind of the whole point of today after all. "You look perfect," he added suddenly. It wasn't the sort of thing he said a lot but today he thought it was important.

Robbie had asked her and Jenny had gladly accepted; these new weddings are both a curiousity and a clear joy. She chose indigo silk to match her eyes, tiny blue flowers woven into her hair and, though she doesn't know many people, she mixes easily.

She did not have many chances to attend many weddings in her youth, save her own.

It is difficult not to feel joyful.

"I'm glad you came with me," he said, kissing her cheek. He glanced at the bride and groom, smiling a little. "Ronon's a good friend. I'm glad he's happy." It was a rare thing to find happiness, Robbie thought.

"You asked, I came," says Jenny, reaching up to touch the side of his face, fondly. "Happiness is a thing to be treased, when found."

Not for the first time, her heart ached for him - for what he'd lost. Somehow, her own losses seemed easier to bear.

Weddings were a bit difficult, as they made him think of his and Cecilia's own impulsive nuptials, but that had eased somewhat with time. "Did you want something to drink?" he asked. "Cake?" The children had occupied themselves with the latter, and Robbie reached over to keep Will from putting icing in Heath's hair.

Whatever craziness she'd been experiencing lately was temporarily put aside for the day, because Sam was genuinely happy for Jennifer and Ronon. Her contribution to the wedding had gone well, the clothes box had given her something nice to wear, and it was a pleasant little party. Refreshingly normal.

"Never saw a better looking priest myself," Jack said teasingly, working on loosening the tie to his dress uniform. He was glad it'd showed up in time for Keller's wedding, but damn if the thing wasn't hot on the island.

"Did a good job."

"Thanks," Sam said, feeling more than a little relieved that her part was done. "Though it was a little more justice of the peace than priest," she teased back. Date or not, she wasn't quite used to the flirting yet, even though she liked it.

She sipped at her drink, a cup of something fruity and laced with rum. Girly, yes, but good.

"Tomato, tomahto," Jack said, waving it off. He peered into her cup, noting the level of the drink.

"Is that your first? Cause I'd love to see drunk Carter for once. I don't think I've ever seen you get past tipsy."

Ronon had though the day had went pretty much perfectly. Of course the fact that Jennifer was his wife now meant that he might have had that opinion even if things hadn't gone off without a hitch. He figured Jennifer knew more of their guests than he did but he was grateful to them all for coming and being part of their day and willing to say so to any and all of the guests.

"Congratulations, Ronon," Robbie said, making his way over to offer his best wishes. Will was otherwise occupied with Ygraine and Jenny, but Heath clung to his hand, staring up at Ronon with his customary slightly awed expression whenever he saw the larger man.

Weddings still stung, a little, and he couldn't help but think of Cecilia at such times, even now. But despite that, he was incredibly happy for his friend and his new wife.

"Thanks," Ronon said grinning. He clapped Robbie on the back and then crouched down to say hi to Heath who was watching him wide eyed as always. "Hey little man," he said. He turned to Robbie. "Glad you could make it," he said sincerely. He would have understood if Robbie if all people couldn't.

"'Wo," Heath said, and reached for Ronon's hair. Both boys always liked playing with the long dreadlocks.

"Wouldn't have missed it," Robbie assured him. "I'm very happy for you both."

To his surprise, Best Manning wasn't too hard. It mostly involved smiling a lot and trying not to throw up at the sappiness of the ceremony itself. But it didn't take all that long, and then there was food at New Atlantis and cake, which was surprisingly good, so it was all worth it in the end. Not just for the food, either. It was nice to see Ronon and Keller happy.

He couldn't help but think something like this wouldn't have been possible back in Atlantis. Everyone was too busy trying not to get killed by Wraith and Replicators and various other Pegasus galaxy nasties to bother with marriage and relationships. It was why he and Katie had never made it that far. But now...

Well.

He was on his fourth (or was it fifth?) slice of cake by that point, and his third glass of rum - or something - and wondering who he could tell next that Keller-Dex sounded like a pocket organizer.

"You were a great best man, Rodney," said Jennifer. "Thanks for being a part of the wedding." She didn't really think Rodney was the wedding-going type, so when he'd agreed to Ronon asking him, that had meant a lot.

"Nuplemgh," Rodney beamed, then amended it after he'd swallowed: "No problem. Hey, free food, right? And alcohol, you can't forget the alcohol." He was aware, dimly, that there was something you were supposed to say in this sort of situation. What was it? Oh, right. "You looked beautiful," he told Jennifer. "Uh. Still do, I mean. Look beautiful, that is. You make a great bride, have you done this before? Wait, no, that doesn't sound - that isn't what I meant..."

Jennifer just rolled her eyes and kissed him on the cheek. He was such a doofus sometimes and two years away from Atlantis hadn't really improved that a whole lot, apparently. "Thanks," she said, trying not to laugh. She appreciated the compliment, even as mangled as it was.
