Between thinking about the baby, the clinics, looking at the possibility of a chicken pox outbreak and the last week of preparation and practice, Devon was glad when game day finally arrived. It brought with it some pretty gusty winds, but it only made things more challenging, and that was what Devon believed everyone should look for when playing a ( Read more... )

So maybe being roped into helping Awesome with baseball stuff from time to time wasn't so bad. Chuck wasn't really a baseball fan, per se, but he did manage to catch a game every now and then since Devon was pretty much in charge of the island league.

Plus he was getting a birthday party out of the whole thing, and that was pretty cool, even if Chuck wasn't exactly sure what turning twenty-eight was supposed to mean. It wasn't twenty-five and it wasn't thirty...it was really just this weird space in the middle of everything. Maybe it meant it was time to try and do something with his life. Whatever that meant on a tropical island...or maybe it meant he only had two years before it seemed kind of pathetic to sit around playing video games all day.

Or maybe it didn't mean anything. Maybe twenty-eight just meant celebrating with friends and family on a blustery day in the sun.

...blustery? God, maybe twenty-eight meant turning into Winnie the Pooh.

A mysterious-looking bag in one hand and a slice of buttery toast in the other, Bridge maneuvered his way through the gathering until he could get his share of time with the birthday guy.

"Hey Chuck," he said brightly, grinning as he raised both arms. "Happy birthday!"

"Hey! Bridge! Thanks," Chuck said, trying to match Bridge's enthusiasm. He was pretty sure he'd come up way short, despite his best efforts. He was pretty sure he'd have trouble doing that even if he was hopped up on caffeine.

"So, having a good time?"

"Yeah! I can't say it's the best time, because we did lose our game, but since that took place before your birthday party proper I probably shouldn't count that as within the time. And the evening is still young, as they say," he rambled. "So, I'll get back to you on that tomorrow. Are you having fun?"

They'd lost their first game of the season and Wanda figured she should probably be at least a little bit disappointed about that, but she was too busy enjoying herself to bother just yet. The wind in her hair, the rush of the game, the turf stains in her jeans, even more wind in her hair... what could she say, she'd missed it. And there was even a random party to boot! Far more disturbing was the fact that she'd been around long enough to see multiple seasons, anyway.

Now if only someone would get the football games back up and running, she'd be set.

"Good game, sugar," Rogue said, smiling sunnily and strolling over. She was a manager, now. It was her duty to attend the other teams' games, meticulously observe their weaknesses and strengths, and devise ways for her team to exploit and subvert them, respectively. Didn't mean she couldn't offer a good acquaintance a friendly compliment as she did.

"Compared to what?" Wanda asked wryly, returning the smile as she tried to shield her plate of food from the winds that were buffeting them. "Thanks, though. Never pegged you for the cheerleader type, you come to root, root, root for the old team?"

"Oh, sure," Rogue said, lifting an arm to block her hair from whipping into her face, "that 'n t'see how they adjusted th'roster t'account for my absence."

"Ah, baseball! The national pastime!" Felix bounced happily on his heels, still thrumming with energy and braving the elements once more in support of a game well played, even if his team had lost. It'd been through no fault of his own, that was for certain, and he was still ecstatic that he'd managed to put together a nice, sporty athletic ensemble just in time for the occasion.

Giving himself a quick once over to make sure his white pants were still pristine, Felix straightened his ascot before going to mingle among the small crowd. "Good game, all!"

Pregnancy did not slow Ellie down one bit. A party was needed - one for her brother, no less - and nothing was going to stop her from putting it together. It maybe wasn't as impressive as her other ones - she hadn't wanted to strain herself too much - but it was a good mix of food nonetheless.

She had a good time watching the game, and now she moved to mingle a little once she was sure everything was set up well. It was a good day for a party, and she was glad that was the case.

"So...how's the future Mrs. Mommy Woodcomb feeling?" Chuck asked when he was finally able to make it past the sea of well-wishers and find his sister in the crowd. As glad as he was that his sister and Devon had thought to do something for his birthday again, he was starting to think that maybe a small family dinner was gonna be the way to go next year.

"Just great," she said with a sunny sort of smile, moving closer to hug him. It was his day, and she was happy to help make it a good one for him, even if it had been a bit of work. Being a little more tired than usual was something she could deal with. "Happy birthday, Chuck. Are you having a good time?"

"Yeah," Chuck said with his own grin. Even though it was just a small gathering, it was still amazing. The only way it could have been better was if Morgan had been there. It was the second year in a long time that he'd had to celebrate without him. All of that kind of went without saying though.

"This is all really great, Ellie. But you guys didn't have to go to this much trouble."

It was just like Buck Compton to sign him up for the team, despite all his protestations, and then up and vanish before Harry could go cuff him round the head.

Not that he minded too much, really. Baseball might not have been Harry's favourite team sport (now, football, if they got that going that'd be a different matter; a legitimate excuse to headbutt people was always fun), but working together with the guys, goofing around between innings, even with the wind making things tricky it was impossible for him not to enjoy himself.

And food, too! Harry didn't really know the guy whose birthday it was, but he knew well enough to never turn down a free meal.

"I'm pretty sure a catcher's supposed to do more than just catch the ball and throw it back to the pitcher," Lipton commented dryly as he came up beside Harry after the game. "I'm sure I'll catch on to the rest of it sooner or later."

Lipton had never really been one for team sports before the war. He'd had some experience with football and track, but baseball had him drawing a blank on everything but the basics. He wouldn't be on the team at all and merely offering moral support from the sidelines if Buck hadn't bluntly informed him that yes, he was playing, go stand over there. Now, with Buck gone, here he was filling in on Buck's previous position, and it was painfully obvious he didn't have the skill or talent of its former occupant. Luckily, their team had won anyway.
