i am a spirit of no common rate ; summer still doth tend upon my state

The sun went down late on Tabula Rasa, and so the sky had barely begun to slide from blue into the pink and orange of sunset when people began to gather in the clearing once more. The mud pit had dried out, the tables moved to one side, more torches placed around the stage that now drew the eye of everyone standing in its shadow ( Read more... )

Bad ideas had a way of lodging themselves into Lloyd's brain and nesting there; not quite like brain cancer, more like brain fleas -- itchy, persistent and damn tricky to get rid off. The person responsible for putting the most recent bad idea in his mind was a certain Sai Firebug, and the idea was jumping over a bonfire.

It was tradition or something.

Lloyd was no fire-leaping wizard - didn't even do stretches or anything - but how hard could it be? He didn't need to do any fancy flips or be particularly showy about it, and figured he could safely leave the queer acrobatics to Boy Wonder and his posse.

Assuming a pose that bore vague resemblance to John Wayne during a particularly tense showdown (or as close to the Duke as you could get while wearing a hula skirt), Lloyd looked at the bonfire ahead, noting with some concern that was a big fucking fire. A lot bigger than it had seemed a few moments ago. But it was for luck and love and all that shit, and it was too late to back out now. Besides, he'd jumped over stuff before -- ( ... )

There was less of a crowd, now. Maybe that was why Violet stared at the flames, crouching close to the fire for a few moments before standing abruptly, and - perhaps learning from the man in the hula skirt - she tucked her skirt up into the bottom of the bodice, none of the diaphanous fabric falling below her hip.

She backed up - bolstered in no small part by wine - and thought of all the things that the Baudelaires had faced. This? This was just a fire. There was no one in it, there was no house to fall out from under her, no elevator shaft to fall down. There was no mob with pitchforks here, just people who cheered when someone did something good and brave.

Violet just moved, not thinking. There would be plenty of time for thinking the rest of her life. Tonight- tonight would be different. She ran and jumped-

It was so quick she honestly couldn't put it back together, the flash of heat and fire and she was on the other side, nothing burning even if she was once again streaked with dirt. She couldn't keep the smile off her face ( ... )

By the time Bill decided to jump the bonfire, his green paint was smeared, but only a little, and he was pissed, but not enough to be unsteady on his feet.

The problem was going to be the long skirt on his Osiris costume. It didn't allow him a whole lot of movement. Bill solved that problem by bringing it up between his legs and tucking it around like a loincloth. He took a moment to judge the height, and the distance needed to make a running start, then with a grin, went for it.

Bill's height was an advantage in this case, plus the fact that he could jump fairly high. He ran for the bonfire without hesitating, jumped, and landed heavily on the other side, stumbling only slightly before gaining his footing and grinning broadly. He'd made it. Naturally, that called for another drink.

Sweets ran up along with Logan, both of them drunk and stupis and eager to have a turn. Logan had said he'd go first so Sweets stepped aside and gestured.

Go, then, if you're gonna," he dared.

It had taken a great deal of trouble, given the lack of magic, but Aly had managed to successfully brew up a magic-free version of the potion the student mages had used to turn their hair blue temporarily. With the blue hair sticking up from her scalp in electrified disarray and the outfit and mask she’d wrangled out of the box, Aly looked nothing like herself. She’d dressed like one of the raka at the festival, all in golds and coppers and bronzes, and had put on every piece of jewelry she could get. While she had to admit she felt a little naked, it was perfectly in the spirit of the evening and it made her look even less like her true self ( ... )

continued from here

After removing the skirt of her outfit so it wouldn't get ripped and setting it aside with her prop bow and quiver, Cassie bravely stepped up to the panel. "I accept, to win your favor and the return of my arrow."

"And your bravery is well-favored, should you pass this test!" Aly declared, her tone grandiose. With no other warning, a knife flew, embedded in the panel very close to Cassie's ribs, just as Aly had aimed.

"That, perhaps, would earn the fletchings of your arrow," she decided, her second knife landing on the left side of Cassie's throat. "How do you fare, brave one?"

Cassie didn't flinch and in fact lifted her chin. She'd faced down worse, even before she'd gotten her powers from Zeus. Knives were nothing. "I say keep them coming, Trickster. It's the whole arrow and your favor or nothing."

Stephen Deschain probably would've taken exception to the Horn of Eld being used for such a purpose, but to Cuthbert's mind everytime the horn sounded on the island of Tabula Rasa, it was a little like sticking a flag in the ground for his forefathers.

Also, it made a really great noise ( ... )

When the horn sounded to announce the start of the fireworks Riku and Cassie headed down to the beach. They found a comfortable spot in the sand and sat down to watch the show. Even after only seeing the first few fireworks go off they knew they were in for a great show.

"Way cool!" Riku exclaimed, flopping onto his back in order to get a better view of the brilliantly colored bursts of light.

"So much cooler then I thought they would be!" Cassie grinned beside him, leaning back on her hands in the sane as she looked up at the fireworks. They were amazing, far better then she expected from the island. This place, and it's people, were full of the unexpected.

She couldn't help a happy sigh. Tonight was going so great. It was just what she needed after the months of tension.

"It reminds of a world I visited briefly called The Land of Dragons. They had some great fireworks there. These are just as good." Riku's words were punctuated by a massive burst of noise and fire overhead. "Maybe even better!" he amended. Riku heard Cassie's contented sigh and turned to smile at her.

"Hey, thanks for inviting me to hang out with you tonight Cassie. This has been a blast! It's been a long time since I got to do anything like this back home. Things had gotten pretty grim." He looked back at the sky. Maybe that was why King Mickey sent him here? To enjoy a bit of calm before the storm?

If there was one way of making mischief that night which seemed especially popular with the court, it was the making of marriages. Serena might have been less than a fan of the practice in the day-to-day, but there was nothing of the ordinary about tonight. If anything, it seemed all the more appropriate, a passel of marriages made to be broken. She was far from alone in her enjoyment of the practice. It looked as if the court would have half the crowd saddled with the other half by daybreak.

"Lady Titania," he said, giving a low, sweeping bow as he approached her on the stage. "I come bearing two mortals, found embracing in the wood. What would you do with them, good Queen? It's been awhile since we had a good beheading," he intoned eagerly. "Or we could just turn them into rabbits."

Cuthbert looked at them darkly, entirely in his role. "I get the feeling it wouldn't be much of a transformation for these two."

Serena had to stifle a laugh. Cuthbert was so good at keeping a straight face when he said these things, it was hard not to find it funny.

"If we were to turn all such mortals into rabbits, we'd have nothing but rabbits come morning," she said, sitting up a little straighter as she tried to keep her tone grave. "No, if they wish to embrace, let them - as man and wife, bound by our court with words as well as ribbons. I would never discourage lovers."

Angua's jaw dropped. She shot a look at Cuthbert. She wasn't exactly sober, but she wasn't exactly drunk either. Still, she wasn't sure whether to laugh or hide.

"Well, this certainly isn't how I imagined my wedding dress to look," she murmured, feeling herself blush, even if it wasn't a true ceremony.

During the planning stage, the Court had learned that the gunslingers intended to teach everyone a dance, one like what they'd done back home at parties of this kind. Knowing her tendency towards picking up things quickly, plus Cuthbert's firsthand experience with her dancing skills, meant the boys had asked Saffron to help teach and had shown her the dance ahead of time. Saffron, of course, was all to happy to help.

The party was in full swing, plenty of folks far into their cups, as Saffron took to the stage, flanked by Cuthbert and Alain. "Attention, all you party folk!" she called, her voice carrying but no less feminine and alluring for it. "It is now the wish of the Fairy Court for you all to join us in a dance!" She raised both arms and extended them, an invitation for them all to gather around, which was met with cheers.

"Come, listen closely, and we three will teach you the way of this dance. Make sure you step lively, though, it's a fast one!" And with that, they began the instruction.

A dance. This was exactly the place in the party Fiyero needed to be.

He was a bit of ways into his cups, but he was still able to pick up the steps with graceful ease. In no time he was spinning and stepping among the others occasionally pulling in someone from the crowd to join them as his partner for the next few spins.
