There are certain things that can just be classified as 'outdoor' things just as easily as other things can be classified as 'indoor' things. For most part record players and video games were 'indoor' things, books could be both and frisbees and baseballs were meant to be used out of doors. Grigg Harris liked the simplicity of categories and ( Read more... )

Donna was out on the beach in her big floppy hat again - and proper shoes this time, thanks to the sunburned tops of her feet. She was actually just heading back to the boardwalk when she spotted the flash of light out of the corner of her eye and turned to get a better look.

... first a horse, now this?

"Oi!" she called, tromping in the sand over to him. "Is that thing real?"

If so, it beat the heck out of a sonic screwdriver. She always thought that was a little barmy anyway.

In Grigg's personal private opinion a sonic screwdriver was all fine and dandy; if you were the Doctor that is, but he wasn't and a lightsaber was just so much cooler. He always wanted to be a Jedi, that's for one.

He nodded, turning the blade and then switching it off. "Uh huh. At least I think it's real. Feels real enough."

Standing in the sand with several feet between them, Donna said, "Maybe I ought to stay right here, then. I'm pretty sure that sort of thing is what my mum had in mind when she said I might put my eye out someday."

Grigg paused for a moment, considering if this too was along the lines of things that his mother had scolded him about like running with scissors and throwing tennis balls at the garage door. More than likely. "Probably," he agreed. "I can turn it off if you want?"

I had already seen a lot of weird stuff in my short time occupying the island, but most of it was stuff that I might have seen walking around the Creek campus. This, however, was unprecedented, as far as I knew. I had a toy light saber when I was younger, but it was plastic and made a weird noise when you hit people with it. I never really was able to weild it correctly, and I would either hit the ground or someone else.

In any case, my mom didn't think it was a great idea to have that thing around anymore. "Shit, man," I greeted instead of with a hello. "Is that a real light saber?"

Back when Grigg had been a kid, toy lightsabers had been painted sticks made out of wood and even if they made fancier things out of plastic, his parents never would have bought him one. Those types of toys were too cheap and too expensive to be worth the cost. But now he was an adult and a real lightsaber was just too cool to pass up.

"Yeah, it is," he said excitedly. "It definitely is."

"Shit," I repeated, pretty unsure of what to say at such a kickass sight. "Is there anything this place doesn't have?"

"I don't know," Grigg admitted, switching the lightsaber from his right to left hands to see how that felt. "I haven't seen any pirates or mermaids, but I have only been here since October."

The novelty of having graphic novel and video game characters, in the flesh, should have been fading by now, but not for Seth Cohen. The same was true for items. Let's say...lightsabers, for example. Oh, there was one right there. He spotted and recognized it, but he kept his distance from it since the last thing he wanted was to have something cut off without him knowing about it until he looked at the sand. Summer would be especially disappointed.

He pulled his new earbuds from his ears and stared at the light show like zombies did with fireworks. Well, depending on which zombie flick you were watching, they did. Seth got an iPod, and this guy got a lightsaber. He wasn't sure if that was fair or not.

In all honesty, Grigg hadn't taken much time to consider the fairness of the trade off as far as this gift was concerned. For his entire life he'd wanted two things: a lightsaber and a puppy. Now that one of them was satisfied, the idea of getting the other was equated in his mind with almost instant death to follow. That seemed only right after all.

Giving it another wave, in a move reminiscent of what he'd seen Luke do when practicing with Obi-Wan, he grinned as he turned the blade off once more. "Pretty cool, huh? It's even better in real life."

Yes, but was it an iPod? Seth thought not. Who needed an awesome lightsaber when you had Rooney? No, Seth wasn't practically foaming at the mouth or anything like that.

"Yeah, dude, it's pretty ridonkulous," he finally admitted, coming closer now that the blade was put away and he didn't risk any injury. "Where'd you learn to use it?" Not that Seth wouldn't have been just as good with it or anything.

There was no way under penalty of inter-galactic torture that Grigg was going to admit that he'd practiced something like this. There were just somethings that a guy just didn't do.

"I've watched a lot of Star Wars," was what he said instead with a shrug, before shutting it off and holding the handle out in offering. "You wanna give it a try?"

From her perch in the red car that had been her gift the year before, Eden laughed, floating out of range of the blade as it blazed into and out of being. Grigg seemed to be enjoying himself and she couldn't blame him, a little awed by it herself. "You're kidding," she said as she landed a couple yards away. "That's seriously a lightsaber."

"Yep, it is," he agreed, still grinning from ear to ear as he lowered the blade, enjoying that fact that it did everything that the ones that he saw in the movies or read about in the books seemed to do. Or at least, it seemed like it did so far. He was half-tempted to take it apart to see how it worked, but he wasn't certain that he'd be able to put it back together and have it work again. "Oh cool. Did you get that?" he asked, gesturing towards her hovercar.

Eden brushed a hand against the side as she climbed out, nodding. "Last year," she said, more focused on his lightsaber than anything else, head tipping to the side to consider it. "So this is just another one of those 'cool things show up out of nowhere and we hope they weren't sent here to kill us' things. Hmm. Where's my toy, then?" Possibly it wasn't fair to ask for more when the island had given her her car, though.

"Maybe it's waiting at home? Perhaps you got pet Sabertooth tiger, like Baby Puss." He laughed amused at the idea of getting things right from movies and TV shows, but slightly less thrilled at the idea that they could have been sent there to kill them. "If it threatens you, I'll tame it with my shiny new toy."

There was a guy waving around what looked like a laser sword on the beach, and Beverly was pretty sure that that wasn't exactly safe. Large cutting material with a perpetually sharp blade...it was fortunate that the Klingons had always been too traditional to do that kind of thing.

There was always something to be said for ranged weaponry.

She perched on a rock nearby and watched the young man for a moment, skeptically, guessing this was something new to him, because his posture needed serious help. If anything, if he cut his own hand off, she could at least provide treatment.

Shutting the blade of the saber off when he noticed someone watching, he squinted and waved at her, still smiling broadly. "Oh, hi!" he called to her, before gesturing to the would-be sword in his hands. "It's my first day. I'm kind of new to it."

"I'm a doctor," Beverly said. "Just making sure no extremities are lost in the process. Nice laser sword."

She'd seen enough fencing to know good form, at any rate, and had tried it a few times, though that wasn't the same as actual fighting. Beverly, like Worf, had not been a merry man either.

"Thanks!" He smiled with the same sort of enthusiasm that was commonly found on fourteen year old boys and truth be told he wasn't far off in the feeling coursing through his veins. This was frankly awesome.

"Doctor?" He squinted a bit more, now that he thought about it, she did look kind of familiar, but then again so did half the island."Cool. My sister's a doctor."
