Horses abound somewhat on the island, yet I've never ventured too close to them; in my entire life, in fact, I've not been closer than the back of a handsome cab.
"Does that mean it's hungry?" I ask, curious as to the origin of the beast's movement.
Glenn glanced up and turned his head, noticing a woman watching with a sort of curious gaze. He smiled as he stepped away from the animal somewhat, though his hand remained rested against the animal's neck. Rohleod regarded the new person, snorting lightly with her ears pricked forward.
"Greetings, m'lady. Nae - that gesture is always a bit more forceful," he said, with an amused smile. She never had any qualms finding a way to tell Glenn when she wanted to eat. "She is just showing affection when she does that, it seems, though I could be wrong. She is my first horse, and I have only had a few months experience with her."
I feel something akin to relief at the somewhat antiquated form of speech; I find always that I'm more comfortable-although admittedly comfort for me is a relative term- with those from earlier times, out of place in their own way as they so often are.-As I myself am.
"A few months is more than I've had, so no doubt you've more of an idea than I," I say, peering at the horse. "Are horses truly affectionate? I'd no idea."
"Oh, aye," he said, nodding his head as he patted the horse gently. "Isn't that right, Rohleod? She's quite an intelligent beast, too. I've come to think of her as a companion."
He looked toward the woman again. "If ye wish, ye can pet her. She is quite gentle, I can promise ye that."
Linen was hardly the rich fabric Anne had become accustomed to, but it was a far better thing to wear gowns of white linen than to die of the heat. And if worn properly, one could still sweep majestically down the shore, which was Anne's new favorite pastime. It pleased her greatly to see color returning to her skin after so long in shadow.
"Good day, sir," she said to the man with the horse. "That's a fine mount."
It was not often he was called sir here, and the woman he found himself looking at when he looked over had an air about her that was almost comfortingly familiar, though he could not put a finger on why.
"M'lady," he greeted, with a friendly smile. "Aye, her name is Rohleod, and I am Glenn. 'Tis a pleasure."
"A pleasure indeed. Are you a knight, sir?" Anne gave him a favourable smile and a deep curtsy. "My apologies! I am Anne Boleyn, Queen of England." Her smile quirked a little. "Ah, well, former queen, at any rate."
Even if he had no courtly skill, it still did her good to meet someone who at least resembled those from home.
A Queen. Though she was not a Queen of a kingdom he had heard of, he certainly knew his place and knew how he was taught to treat anyone of such a high rank.
"It has been quite a long time since someone called me that," he said, and his head was bowed somewhat. "I served Queen Leene as the newest leader of her knights where I am from. Alas, it was soon after I came here."
The horse knickered softly when she noticed Robb approaching, clearly recognizing the man.
"I do think both I and Rohleod would like that," Glenn said, patting the horse one last time before moving away to looking over at Robb. "How are ye, Robb?"
"Taking it one day at a time, as always," he said, not wishing to burden anyone with the most recent loss. "This change in scenery is quite strange, though I suppose no stranger than the snow that fell not long ago. I cannot help but wonder what might be next sometimes."
