Tosh had spent days preparing for this. Days trying to not think of family at home, rather all that she had here and should be glad for. In the end it had worked, and she and Owen stood smiling at the edge of the pool, Jackson cradled in her arms, gazing out at everyone who'd come ( Read more... )

She felt out of place.

Sarah Jane didn't know Toshiko quite that well, but the invitation had been received and she would be hard-pressed to ignore it because that would just be utterly impolite. After all, it was something to watch a new life take on the steps in a long journey of excitement and adventure, all the things that life had to offer.

She hovered by the edges, not wishing to interrupt anything.

She'd invited Sarah Jane partly because of the old Sarah Jane, her friend who was no longer here. It had seemed right to her. "Enjoying yourself?" she asked, shifting Jackson from one arm to another.

Sarah Jane had on her most polite smile, quite genial and kind and she gave a nod. "I didn't expect to find the invitation," she said, honest and blunt, because hinting around the truth seemed useless. "But it's a lovely day and thank you for inviting me."

"I..." Tosh shrugged, not willing to lie, "I wanted to invite you. I'm glad you came."

Jane had brought Lydia with her, bouncing her lightly when she began to blow distracted bubbles (truly, however, she was merely drooling) and Jane took simple pleasures in narrating the events to her daughter, as though she might understand precisely the matters at hand.

Perhaps she did not yet, but Jane wished her daughter to know her voice and the soft whispers did not disturb any of the ceremony.

Honestly, if it had been Tosh and Jackson watching a ceremony, she likely would have done the exact same thing. She didn't know Jane well, but she was part of her extended circle, and it had seemed right to invite her. Tosh smiled as she approached the other woman, Jackson now heavy in her arms. "Thank you for coming."

Jane's smile was bright and genuine as she curtsied (and Lydia curtsied as well, by proxy, babbling lightly, cooing as she did). "It was my pleasure, as I was most happy to be invited. And your Jackson does look so very handsome."

"Thank you. I think it's his father he takes after," Jackson was twisting in her arms, his eyes tracking the nearby movement and the new voices. "I think he likes you."

It had been a lovely ceremony. Jessica smiled as she glanced at the other people waiting to give their well wishes. Moments like these were probably the most reassuring of human experience.

She was in no hurry, and in fact was finding herself quite content to mix with the crowd as she waited for her own opportunity.

"Jessica," Tosh smiled when she saw the other woman, now more obviously pregnant. "I'm glad you came."

"And I'm honored to be invited. Congratulations." She smiled glancing at mother and child. "You are attempting to get plenty of rest?" With a newborn it was more easily said than done.

"Trying to." It was hard. Harder than she'd expected. "I have good friends, it makes it a bit easier."

If someone had told the Doctor a year and a half ago that he'd be going to a christening for the baby of two members of Torchwood, he would have laughed in their face, rude and not ginger or otherwise. But yet here he was, and it was quite a beautiful ceremony, really, not the usual muttering and splashing water around and all that bollocks.

If for some reason they were to have a child, this would be far more suitable than the splashing, he thought, then mentally kicked himself for assumptions.

Tosh hadn't wanted a traditional christening, and had thought hard on how to make this day work for both her and Owen. She was happy with the result. "Doctor, thank you for coming," She smiled, Jackson a wriggling bundle in her arms, tired of being held for so long.

"It was my pleasure." The Doctor waved at Jackson and turned his free hand into a bunny rabbit with fingers for pointy ears. "It was truly a lovely ceremony, Tosh."

Jackson was instantly entranced by the movement near his face, and Tosh smiled at it. "Thank you. It's different here. What we end up wanting to do."

What they had the freedom to do as well, one way not having her parents here wasn't so bad, though even thinking that made her wince.

Abby had been touched and pleased when Tosh had asked her to be a godparent, and had very happily accepted. The idea that someone might want her to actually influence their child occasionally boggled her mind, but she was a parent herself, practically, so maybe it made sense.

After the ceremony, she stood to the side, holding Mack and looking at the crowd. Mack was far more interested in the string of big wooden beads Abby had given her. That Scottish guy with the tattoos made great technology-free baby toys.

It really had been a beautiful ceremony.

"Abby," Tosh leaned in to kiss her friend on the cheek, shifting Jackson so he wasn't in the way. "Funny. I never thought I'd be doing this."

Abby smiled and kissed Tosh's cheek in return, maneuvering carefully around the two children. Mack had apparently decided that Jackson was more interesting than her beads and Abby had to put a hand out quickly to prevent them from falling while the little girl stared.

"Trust me, you're not the only one who's a little boggled by this. I know I already asked this and I don't think you can take it back anyway, but are you sure you want me influencing your child? I'm kind of strange."

Mack was definitely more interesting than the bit of kimono Jackson had in his mouth, twisting to see more. Tosh gave in, and changed his position so he was looking out at people. "You've met Ianto? And Jack? Besides, you're my friend. You'll be a good influence."
