There was a giant clock on the wall. It hadn't been there yesterday, and because it hadn't been there yesterday Dwight was staring at it

Angela had only come back to the party because she didn't want to spend midnight of New Year's Eve by herself. Seemed like that defeated the whole purpose of being married, if she wasn't going to kiss her husband then.
Of course, her husband was disgustingly drunk. She hoped that wasn't the way he planned to spend the upcoming year.
Dwight was so enthused by the prospect of New Years kissing, that he dismissed the countdown altogether and reached for his wife. He kissed her on the mouth and then pulled away, beaming. "Happy New Year!"
"Dwight"!" snapped Angela, who was standing right there while her inebriated husband kissed a man instead of her. As if she hadn't been humiliated enough tonight.
Charlie was drunk, but not so drunk that she couldn't stand up in her high heels. She watched the count down, and then she turned around, smiling, but, underneath it all, she couldn't believe how suddenly she wanted to cry.
And Hiro hadn't even been here last year, either. Still, she turned around, looking for a kiss.
Donald had been talking with Anthony at the time, only too happy to turn and see Charlie right there. Before he even realised what he was doing his hand was on her cheek and his lips pressed soft to hers, whispering happy new year as he did so.
He took her by surprise. It was the second time he'd kissed her when she was drunk, and the way that it made her feel that was complicated. She felt a wave of guilt, because of Hiro, and this warmth that rose in her too, and Maud was there at the back of her head and, suddenly, she couldn't breathe, with one hand against his chest.
It's kind of nice to actually have someone to kiss when the clock strikes midnight. Mayko counts down as enthusiastically as anyone, then grabs Gus as soon as the cheer goes up.
River had been having a nice time at the party on her own, talking to lots of people. She was having so much fun, she lost track of time. Now it was nearly midnight, and she had no idea where Mal was. She couldn't see the point in even having New Year's if she couldn't kiss him.
She wasn't sure how to track a person in the midst of a party, so she just climbed up on a chair to get a better look over people's heads.
Mal had been standin' in the corner talkin' t' Shepherd when all the countin' n' such started t' happen. Been here on the island long 'nough now, Mal knew he ought t' start seekin' River out, so he did jus' that. Trouble was, so many folks were millin' 'bout n' she weren't the tallest person, so he had a bit o' trouble...'til she stood up on a chair.
He found her much more easily then n' went t' her, smilin.
Without e'en sayin' a word, he scooped her up in his arms n' took her down from the chair, then promptly pretended t' damned near drop her.
"I'm thinkin' that'll be so," Mal said in 'greement. Better'n the last year with all the loss o' the crew n' such, that was for sure. He n' River had thin's t' look forward t' this time 'round.
"Happy New Year," he said then, thumb brushin' a bit o' hair out o' her eyes.

But anyway, she no longer had a drink in hand and that was the important thing. That, and the counting down.

And Chuck found himself kissing another guy he didn't want to kiss.
"Woah! Hi!" Chuck said pulling back as fast as humanly possible.

"Almost a brand new year," she said, almost impossibly happy just then. "I think it'll be a good one."
