There was a giant clock on the wall. It hadn't been there yesterday, and because it hadn't been there yesterday Dwight was staring at it

River had been having a nice time at the party on her own, talking to lots of people. She was having so much fun, she lost track of time. Now it was nearly midnight, and she had no idea where Mal was. She couldn't see the point in even having New Year's if she couldn't kiss him.
She wasn't sure how to track a person in the midst of a party, so she just climbed up on a chair to get a better look over people's heads.
Mal had been standin' in the corner talkin' t' Shepherd when all the countin' n' such started t' happen. Been here on the island long 'nough now, Mal knew he ought t' start seekin' River out, so he did jus' that. Trouble was, so many folks were millin' 'bout n' she weren't the tallest person, so he had a bit o' trouble...'til she stood up on a chair.
He found her much more easily then n' went t' her, smilin.
Without e'en sayin' a word, he scooped her up in his arms n' took her down from the chair, then promptly pretended t' damned near drop her.
"I'm thinkin' that'll be so," Mal said in 'greement. Better'n the last year with all the loss o' the crew n' such, that was for sure. He n' River had thin's t' look forward t' this time 'round.
"Happy New Year," he said then, thumb brushin' a bit o' hair out o' her eyes.
"Real happy," she said. "Happy New Year, Captain. You can't have otherwise when you've got an albatross to love you."
She could hear the countdown, first Dwight (who she hoped Jim was seeing, because he was a very funny drunk person), and then everyone else joining in.
"Three... two...." She added her own voice to the crowd, but not loud enough for anyone but Mal to hear her.
"Ain't that the truth," Mal murmured in 'greement. 'hind him he heard that Dwight fella who'd talked t' him 'bout Serenity once, n' then other folk started countin' in, 'ncludin' River.
When they all got t' one, Mal leaned in t' kiss her, not carin' for once who could 'r couldn't see.
River hadn't ever cared who saw her and Mal, but she could feel the difference when he kissed her this time. It was like there wasn't anyone else in the world, and she didn't mind at all.
Arms around his neck, she kissed him back and made a wish; that she could go on feeling this way forever. She didn't think they'd never have trouble thrown at them again, but she felt like she could handle anything now. No question at all.

"Almost a brand new year," she said, almost impossibly happy just then. "I think it'll be a good one."
