Remember, remember...a bit too well, perhaps

Evey hated days like today.  They'd start out normal and fine, with a sunny day and nothing much going on, and then they'd unexpectedly crash into fiery bits.

Usually the crashing into bits part involved some wild animal feasting on her roses and Rollo shaking salty fishy muddy water all over her and then the clothesbox giving her only dirty ( Read more... )

"...Evey?"

On his way home from the beach, Peter had spotted the familiar face burst from the underbrush and take cover, as if something or someone was following her. While he wasn't officially on the police department here, he'd rescued her before and certainly wasn't above doing it again, even if it was from something with very sharp teeth.

"Evey?" he asked again, stepping carefully closer. "What is it?" Hopefully she wouldn't smack him for being a bastard, although he certainly deserved it.

Evey was breathing hard, still very much in flight mode (because fight wasn't really an option with Fingermen), but she recognized Peter's voice. She hadn't seen him much, but then she didn't see many people. She could go several days without speaking to anyone but Ian and Rollo.

"Do you see two men wearing all black anywhere?" she asked him urgently.

"No-" Peter carefully peered around the tree and into the jungle beyond. "Was someone following you?" he asked, his gaze falling immediately back down to Evey. She seemed physically okay, which was a relief, but she was clearly distressed.

"I...I think so. I must have lost them," she said. Not that she wasn't sure they'd be back if they really were there.

She stood up cautiously, looking around carefully.

Padme shifted Sola higher on her hip, the bag over her shoulder. They'd been out on the beach and both mother and daughter had ended up napping a bit later then expected. She hesitated when she saw Evie just... Sitting, but-

"Evie? Are you alright?" Sola babbled meaningless sounds, and Padme ignored them, the concern much more important then her daughter's quest to pull on her hair.

Evey had calmed a bit while she sat under the tree. She'd lost the Fingermen somewhere, she thought, at least for now, though she didn't have any illusions about whether she'd lost them permanently.

She managed a semblance of a smile for Padme and Sola, "Um, yes, I-I think so, thank you."

That was another concern. What if the Fingermen approached Padme, thinking she was Evey?

Padme thought for a moment. There was something that had the other woman on edge-

"Would you come with me? Into the Compound?" She thought for a moment. "We could get some food?"

"Alright," Evey agreed. Given the choice between an outside that had Fingermen and an inside that did not, she would take inside, especially if it got Padme and Sola inside as well.

She got up and surreptitiously looked around. No black uniforms anywhere, just green.

"Woah!" exclaimed Gunn when something, although he assumed it was someone, exploded through the underbrush, across the path and into the trees on the other side. Expecting someone else to follow, he stood still for a moment, but no one came. He walked forward and crouched down. His eyes eventually fell on a young woman.

"Uh, whoever you were runnin' from?" he said. "Pretty sure you lost 'em."

Evey looked up at the man, still breathing a little hard from running, "I certainly hope so."

She somewhat doubted it, though. She hadn't lost them permanently, if they really were who she thought they were.

He extended a hand to help her up, although really, he wouldn't be suprised if she didn't take it.

"Didn't think this place had bad guys," he mused out loud. "Unless you're runnin' from Jurassic Park...?"

It would be rude not to, so Evey took his hand and got up, though she dropped it quickly afterwards, in case she did need to run.

"Sometimes things follow you here," she replied. "Even if you rather wish they wouldn't."
