Remember, remember...a bit too well, perhaps

Evey hated days like today.  They'd start out normal and fine, with a sunny day and nothing much going on, and then they'd unexpectedly crash into fiery bits.

Usually the crashing into bits part involved some wild animal feasting on her roses and Rollo shaking salty fishy muddy water all over her and then the clothesbox giving her only dirty ( Read more... )

"Woah!" exclaimed Gunn when something, although he assumed it was someone, exploded through the underbrush, across the path and into the trees on the other side. Expecting someone else to follow, he stood still for a moment, but no one came. He walked forward and crouched down. His eyes eventually fell on a young woman.

"Uh, whoever you were runnin' from?" he said. "Pretty sure you lost 'em."

Evey looked up at the man, still breathing a little hard from running, "I certainly hope so."

She somewhat doubted it, though. She hadn't lost them permanently, if they really were who she thought they were.

He extended a hand to help her up, although really, he wouldn't be suprised if she didn't take it.

"Didn't think this place had bad guys," he mused out loud. "Unless you're runnin' from Jurassic Park...?"

It would be rude not to, so Evey took his hand and got up, though she dropped it quickly afterwards, in case she did need to run.

"Sometimes things follow you here," she replied. "Even if you rather wish they wouldn't."

"Must be bad whatever it is," he replied. Her tension made Gunn acutely aware of his surroundings, almost as if he was back home again and there was a vamp nest around the corner.

"I wouldn't call it pleasant, no," she agreed, then realized she was being rude. "I'm terribly sorry, I didn't mean to startle you."

He shrugged as if it were no big deal. Hell, it was sort of exciting in its own way. He missed that feeling of adrenaline.

"Don't worry 'bout it," he said. "Mind tellin' me what you were runnin' from?"

"Two men, all in black," she replied simply. "They're members of the state police from my particular version of the world."

She was beginning to wonder whether she'd seen them now. She hadn't run that fast, honestly. They should have caught up with her.

He turned to face the direction from which she had ran from, almost expecting someone to come running through, but there was, again, nothing. It had been the same thing with Yuffie couple of days ago. Nothing. He looked back at her.

"Don't care much for my version of the police either," he said. Of course, those had been zombies. And had shot Wesley in the stomach. Neither was particularly forgivable. "I'm Gunn, by the way. Charles Gunn."

"I'm not particularly fond of government in general," she admitted with a small smile. "It's nice to meet you, Mr. Gunn. I'm Evey Hammond."

He matched her smile, truth be told, he didn't care much for the government either.

"So, you see these guys here before?" he asked.

"I thought I saw them a few days ago, but not before that," she answered readily. "New people arrive every day, and I assumed someone from my world would eventually arrive. I had hoped it wouldn't be people who want to detain me, though."

"So you some sort of fugitive or is your government just whack where you're from?" he asked, only half joking. Looks could, after all, be deceiving. For all he knew, she had been some serial killer.

"Bit of both," she admitted with a chuckle. "I'm technically a fugitive but the government is also insane. It's a totalitarian fascist state. They don't much like political dissidents."

Gunn paused at that. "So, I'm guessin' this place is an improvement?"

"Very much so," she chuckled again. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to go on and on. Is this an improvement for you?"

He seemed like he'd had to fight for things during his life. It was something about the way he carried himself.
