here. The ages have changed, Donghyun is 22 and Youngmin is 20
Donghyun got into his small green Nissan micra, he’d just got out of class and the benefit of doing a degree in Vocal Performance and Composition meant that his vocal classes were often short and before lunch so he usually got to eat at a reasonable time unlike some of the other university students he knew. Such as Youngmin, who was a training teacher who was at his wits end, he had troubled students and wasn’t sure he could make them see that they needed to do some studying.
Donghyun was little help to his roommate in that department, he knew nothing about teens, he’d had a troubled adolescence, skipping class, failing classes, getting into fights and a little bit of breaking school rules on uniform, work and other things. Donghyun didn’t know what got him back taking it serious. Maybe it was when he told his girlfriend that he wanted to be a singer/composer, and he sang to her and she laughed. Donghyun had then made it his mission to get into a school to do vocals and composition. Donghyun had been saved by the fact that he hated people telling him what he couldn’t do.
Donghyun pulled up at the front of the school, he hated the fact that his roommate didn’t have his own car and had to teach at the other end of town. Donghyun hated going to pick him up, he hated the way everyone sneered at him inferring more than was going on. Donghyun hated the way Youngmin would always be late and Donghyun would have to wait, being reminded of the awful days he spent at school but he still did it every single day.
Youngmin was younger than he was, and was a twin. Donghyun occasionally got a glimpse of Kwangmin but he was aware that Youngmin didn’t want much to do with his twin, something about narcotics and money. Donghyun never pressed for answers it didn’t overly bother him whether or not Youngmin talked to his twin, not as much as it bothered him that Youngmin was once again late.
When Youngmin finally came out, he was shaking, he got into the car and did up his seat belt, looking at Donghyun who was just watching him. Youngmin shivered a little and closed his eyes, trying his best not to cry. “What’s wrong?” Donghyun said quietly, Youngmin shot daggers at him. Before responding.
“My twin… he came to the school. He said he was going to tell my parents about me and about you.”
“About me? What have I done?”
“Nothing… Just nothing… I fell for you a long time ago.” Youngmin said looking down. “I’m gay, I guess I should have told you that before I accepted to be your roommate, and I am going to pack up my things tomorrow anyway and go home, because I have to stop my brother telling my parents that I’m gay.” Youngmin breathed. “They’ll kill me.”
“Right.” Donghyun’s mind went back to all the time Youngmin had cooked for them, the times when Youngmin slept with him because he was scared of lightning, all platonic on Donghyun’s behalf but had he led the younger on? He then thought about Valentine’s Day when his ‘secret admirer’ had made him chocolate and left him a note saying they didn’t expect anything in return but were closer than he thought. “Valentine’s Day was you right?” Youngmin nodded. “You do know I’m straight right?” Youngmin nodded.
“I don’t want you to love me back if that’s what you think, and anything I did with you was never taken the wrong way in my mind, you were a friend I had a crush on. Nothing more, I never thought you would reciprocate and I respect that you’re straight, I would never try to force myself on you.” Youngmin burst into tears.
“Look, I’ll drive you to your parents and maybe you should tell them, or if not make sure your brother doesn’t but don’t move out.” Donghyun sighed, “Don’t move out because you’re my best friend and I don’t care if you’re gay or straight or like aliens I just know you cook the best fried rice I’ve ever tasted and pay half the rent.”
They both smiled, and Youngmin relaxed a little, wiping his eyes and trying to compose himself to get ready to go. “We’ll aren’t you going to start the car?” Youngmin whispered.
