Well, there was the proof. River Song's death wasn't a fixed point in time at all. She laughed dryly with the energy she had left, slowly relaxing her alpha meson gun out of her hands as she sank down the wall of the Stormcage Facility. The last Doctor she had seen barely even recognised her. She knew was what coming next. He wouldn't know at at all. She had always said it was going to kill her, nobody realised what that meant.

"God dammit," she breathed as she felt regeneration energy begin to spark throughout her body. She made another reach for the gun, gasping quietly from the effort. She wasn't going to renew her cells, not this time. This was a real death.

Methos couldn't stop the tears now. He felt utterly defeated.

"Can you at least get this damn thing open and let me in?" he didn't know that he'd be able to face her again after this. Any past hers. It would hurt too much.

She opened her eyes again, slowly looking towards him and watching his tears fall. She hesitated for a moment before she began to quietly give him the code to unlock the cell door.

He listened attentively then when the code was in and the door beeped he quickly threw it open and collected her in his arms. Methos put a hand over the wound trying uselessly to stop the blood, "Why can't you regenerate? Please... please River..."

Before she knew it, she was wrapped up in the warmth of Methos' arms and she instinctively laid her face into his chest. She felt safe like this, even if she was dying. She lifted her hand to rest against the back of his neck, cradling him close to her.

"I'm holding off the regeneration," she told him in a soft voice. "But I could lose control any moment."

"But why?" he ran a hand through her hair and kissed the side of her face, tasting the salt of his own tears as he did so, "I love you... please don't go."

He just didn't understand how she could do this. His River had always been so strong.

River lifted her head, bringing her hand to his cheek and holding him. "Yes, I'm choosing to," she whispered, running her hand down his cheek. "I've done so much with my life. I'm content with it." She wiped at his tears, frowning gently. "Oh, my love. Don't cry. You'll see me again."

"And I'll only be able to think of this moment." he gazed in her eyes, doing his best to stop but the tears kept falling, "I've never loved anyone as much as I loved you..."

And he knew that might not be true for her. She had the Doctor too. But he didn't care. That didn't change the ache in his heart. The hole that was going to be in his heart when she died.

"I don't want to be alone," she told him, her voice growing softer. "Not without you, not without the Doctor. I'll never see him again, and eventually, I'll run out of moments with you. That's far worse than death." Her fingers brushed against his cheek, trying to soothe him. "Nothing's forever. Not even this."

He shut his eyes, thoroughly grief-stricken. He knew everything ended. Lord knows he'd seen the end of so much. But he didn't ever relish it. And he hated how stupid he been to think maybe this would be the one thing that would never end.

"You are alone...I'm here, aren't I?" he suddenly had a sinking feeling in his gut.

"Nothing's forever," she repeated again, laying her temple to his chest and closing her eyes. Her body was still insistently trying to regenerate and it was getting harder and harder to force back. As soon as it began, she would need to shoot herself mid-regenerate to kill herself entirely.

"I'm... you saw me..." he couldn't even say it. Couldn't even ask the question. But despite the knowledge that he'd die that didn't make him grieve this any less.

River didn't say anything. She didn't want to confirm nor deny it. She was entering a life without him, and that was all that mattered, however it came about.

She shushed him gently when he spoke, running her hand against cheek in a reassuring motion.
