I finished my Zen Jacket over the weekend. I need to get some better photos, but this gives you an idea what it looks like. And it's nice and warm, being crocheted with aran/worsted weight yarn in double (British triple) crochet. (Yarn is Caron Simply Soft Paints, colour Oceana.) There are photos here of the beginning of the project, including a ( Read more... )

The shawl is very pretty. I like the yarn a great deal.

Thanks! And actually, it's not easy to tell from that photo, but it's a cardigan, not a shawl. You can see photos from different angles on the pattern: http://www.naturallycaron.com/projects/zen/zen_1.html

And it's US yarn that my dad's partner sent me as a gift, so if you do any yarn crafts, you can easily get ahold of some of your own. :-)

Lovely. Sadly I can't wear wool, but I love all these fancy yarns. A friend of mine spins and her yarns are amazing. She makes fabulous one-off hand spun and hand-knitted (or crotcheted) garments. Her daughter has a wool shop in Andover and half their trade is wool for felting and spinning, not just yarns for knitting. It's amazing stuff.

This isn't wool, actually. It's 100% acrylic. It's hard to find the same range of acrylic yarns here in the UK that you can get Stateside. I'm only, in this past year, learning to work with fancier yarns. Acrylic might be cheap, but it's quite suitable for some things....including for people who can't wear wool!

I want one! Hmm. Guess I'd better get that "Learn To Crochet" book back out and try again...

I *LOVE* Debbie Stoller's book THE HAPPY HOOKER, although I already knew how to crochet. I bought it for the patterns. Not only is it chock-full of information and great patterns, but also the woman is a fantastic writer. I enjoy reading stuff I already know just because she has such flair with words.

Further, when I had my first knitting lesson a few weeks ago, the book the teacher recommended was the first of Debbie Stoller's knitting books. So she's established a rep as being a good resource for beginners.

Now go forth and start practicing!
