Bugs

Today my biology lab wandered around outside with nets to catch bugs. We went down through the parking lots and out onto the nature preserve to find them. It ended up being pretty neat, although I found too many spiders for my taste I did find some neat things. First, I found a few little guys including a slug and a millipede. You should try to pick up a praying mantis with your hands one of these days... That's fun.

I thought that it was the females preying mantini (mantises?) that were the really scary ones.

They are the same thing, both genders, but it's the female ones that eat the males after they're done mating.

You would love Japan then. Giant bugs everywhere. Black butterflies the size of your hand, cicadas the size of your thumb. Yesterday I had a curious green bug about two inches in length wander up my laptop speakers. I picked him up and took him back outside.

I also have a baby praying mantis on one of my window sills. I leave him to it. Praying mantises eat other bugs, and that's all to the good as far as I'm concerned.

He's a very light, yellow green. But he disappeared off somewhere. Well, it's kinda hard to find prey when you're on the inside of the window sill, so I suppose he must have moved on.
