Ever since someone (don't remember who) said it would be a hoot if people kept confusing the companion for the Doctor, I've thought they really could do something good by making his youth a running joke. But if they go that route, I hope they do it right by making him really Doogie-ish -- i.e. not cool and sexy but nerdy and a bit clueless. Otherwise, it's just mixed messages -- but I suspect that's exactly what it will be.
Yes--I always liked it when Ten was genuinely dorky. And, especially given the fact that Matt Smith's age has already become an issue, I think that could be a good way of turning a potential liability into an asset. Though I suppose the other way they could go is the "old soul in a young body" route, which could itself be a funny juxtaposition if everyone else just sees the young body. I guess we'll have to wait and see...
He's not THAT much younger than Davison was, when Davison was cast... Though, admittedly, he does look even younger. I am amused, though, that they started with a high level of frenetic energy with Christopher Eccleston, got even more frenetic energy with David Tennant, and seem to be moving even further up the scale with Smith. How long before the TARDIS spontaneously combusts?
True--and the pictures of Matt Smith with the TARDIS, with the emo hair and the skinny jeans, aren't helping him look any older.
As for the energy level--hee. I remember thinking at the time that Christopher Eccleston was really energetic (and I remember the TWoP recapper referring to the Ninth Doctor's "cosmic ADD"), and when I look back at him, after Ten, I can barely see it anymore. :) If they do go for manic with Matt Smith, I'm kind of afraid to see what it would take to top David Tennant!
