No, I didn’t, Charles wanted to say. It was the island’s decision to sacrifice our son, and it had its reasons. And as the leader, I have to abide by it.
He remembered that the day the Linus boy came to him. “You chose to leave the island, to be with your child with the outsider, while your people are dying. They made their choice, and they don’t want you as leader now. Jacob has chosen me.”
Charles had thought the island made its decisions for the greater good. He was wrong.
