[Knuckles glances at Don, but doesn't look at him as he continues.]
For a long time I didn't know why, or how, all I knew was my duty...but then, things changed.
[Change came, and of course he hated it, but he had became accustomed to a certain few intruding in his solitary life, and would never admit to missing them now that more change had come and taken him from where he belonged.]
...I guess that's why I like you Don...[Knuckles looks at Donatello's cup of coffee] sometimes, you remind me of a friend of mine.
[Knuckles glances at the bo.]

The turtle understands how it feels like to be alone. That time when he was in the destroyed lair by himself... or the aftermath after the final fight with that alternate Shredder. He knew how it was to be alone. He listens to Knuckles quietly... and then blinks when Knuckles not only compliments him, but says he reminds him of two friends.
Like Leo, he doesn't always take compliments well, and looks a bit embarrassed.]
E-er, I like you too, Knuckles... And I'm glad you're not alone anymore.
[And now, the confusion wins over.]

I'm not always sure it's something to be glad of...
[Friends can be a weakness, can turn against him, can be lost...which is exactly why he could be viscously protective of the ones he did trust.]
Yeah, Two of the freedom fighters, Porker Lewis, he decided to stay when...
[Knuckles paused.]
I tell you what, you've told us a story, how about I tell you one?

[That's Don's view of it, and he's sticking to it. Yes, friendships can be used against you, but they also gave you strength.
Don blinks for a moment, and then nods with a soft smile. He turns his chair around so that he's half-facing his bed while still being able to pet Klunk.]
Uh, sure. ... feel free to sit down. Note to self: get another chair.

Knuckles mean while sits on the bed, looking amused as Don made that verbal note to himself]
I suppose I should start at the beginning...
[And Knuckles spoke of what he had thought to be a comet landing on his island. How there was a human inside, the first human he had ever met, the first person he had met, trapped and in need of help, and how in return for helping him he warned him of a threat to the island and the emeralds...]
An evil person known as Sonic the Hedgehog...
[Knuckles pauses for a second waiting to see of Don would interrupt at that.]

Don stares at Knuckles in surprise. Wait. Wait. He knew this answer. Not that he hadn't recognized Knuckles after his initial shock of being sent here, but....]
Was the man who told you this named Dr. Robotnik?

[He rubs the back of hsi head for a moment.]

[Eventually Knuckles starts again, explaining how Sonic had come, just as Knuckles had been told he would, saying and doing exactly what was expected, how Sonic had captured Robotnik and took him back to his base...just as planned.]
The base was a secret see, Robotnik wanted to be caught, to find out where it was...turns out it was underground, in the Emerald Hill Zone, I had already met Sonic and tails, it was in the base that I saw Amy, Johnny, and Porker...Porker Didn't make a very good first impression. Robotnik had taken him hostage...
[Robonik had forced Sonic to hand over the hedgehog's chaos emeralds, Robotnik had said Knuckles could keep them, he just wanted them out of Sonic's hands, and Knuckles needed them. And so they left for the island, Sonic and Tails chasing after them.They attacked ( ... )

At the end, he blinks.]
... You mean seven emeralds. And.. you're testing me, aren't you?
[Don's picking up quickly.]

[Oops, please ignore that little fumble]
Of course that wasn't the end of it, Robotnik and Sonic were at war, and Robotnik knew where Sonic's base was now...It was my duty to make sure my actions did not lead to his down fall.
[When Knuckles had reached the base, Sonic, Johnny and Porker were trapped in the under ground base, it had been easy to dig them an escape tunnel, but then there were the armies of Badniks to take care of too..Johnny was quiet, didn't shout half as many taunts or insults ( ... )

[And so he does ignore it, but he remembers it.
The comments about Porker and Johnny make him smile, but the smile grows softer, sadder, as the conversation turns back to him.]
It's.. more like they chose to fight with me. I was nervous about being around Mikey at first, but he.. he was still my brother. [And the smile grows a bit sadder.] I've... heard that courage isn't the absence of fear but the mastery of it. I'm still afraid--terrified of talking about it, actually--but I know I need to do this.

Heh, I'd feel a bit weird if I met the freedom fighter and they were thirty years older than I remembered too.
...I believe you're right, I had to fight a demon once, that could make you feel fear...I was almost helpless, it was Porker who saved the emeralds that day. Not me.

[A slight laugh.] They... took it pretty well in stride, even better than I did. But I think they were just glad to see me again....
[Don smiles.] If I could meet this Porker some day... I'd like to.

Sonic's travelled though time more than once, so I guess I wouldn't be that surprised, nothing like that never happened to you and your brother before this?
He...wouldn't do well here.
