Getting back to basics [ota]

May 03, 2011 23:14

With the ban on leaving the rooms lifted, Jane had been pretty much ready to get back to his routine. He knew that things were a tad more lax around this place, that the rules and regulations weren't as tight, but it was a lot to let go of in a short space of time. So he stuck to his usual ( Read more... )

I couldn't resist having them meet after his thread with Angel... notouchpolicy May 3 2011, 22:54:12 UTC
Haylie was in the mess hall following her morning run, and she'd normally be training with Wade right now, but since he was still feeling a bit sick - she decided to hold off for now. So she decided that now would be time for breakfast, rather than later.

Orange juice and plate of food in hand, she wandered over to her usual table and sat down across from the new guy, not realizing she had company until she looked up.

"Oh. Uh, this spot taken?"

"No," Jane just sort of waved his hand at the seat and nodding, "on you go." She was already sitting but it wasn't a big issue for him. He spent months on carriers and in camps so they were regular times where you were surrounding by different people at different times.

"Make yourself comfortable." Truthfully, Jane would welcome the company. He'd been stuck in a room on his own for the most part and beyond the brief conversation with Mystique and Captain Sykes when he arrived and then the phone call with Angel, well. He was missing interaction that he always got before with an over crowded Air Force base.

"Thanks. Sorry, I didn't really see you. Not that y'don't stick out. I just... kinda have tunnel vision." She replied awkwardly, her native New York accent thicker when she was tired and incidentally? She was still recovering her energy as well as Wade.

Starting on her eggs, she glanced up at him, studying carefully before her manners (she had them, really) kicked in. "You're new, right? I'm Haylie." Wiping her hands off on her pants, she offered a hand across the table.

First thing in the morning, food on the line, time for breakfast, he'd get a little bit of tunnel vision too. "Don't worry about it." Jane tended not to take offence at the little things.

He just gave a nod at the question to him being new, it was too much effort to explain he'd been around before, but assignments being what they were, he hadn't stayed. It wasn't until after he'd reached out to shake her hand that the name clicked.

"Really? Pleasure," and he smiled just as he dropped her hand, "I'm Worth."

When she'd finally gotten around to reading the information Ethan had given her, Emma had been a little surprised to see that there had been a recruit during the lock down. It shouldn't have surprised her at all, not when she read through the file and noticed that this was a return and also one of Stone's requests.

The man was going to get a thorough exercise in information sharing, and Emma didn't care how Ethan felt about her using her powers on Stone, she was doing it.

Finding him in the cafeteria, while it shouldn't be the big surprise, Emma would admit -to herself at least- that is was mildly shocking. Not enough to phase her though. Taking her coffee and a scone, Emma took herself over to the table where Worth sat and took the seat opposite.

"Pardon the intrusion, but I felt it best to introduce myself. Emma Frost, I understand you've met my," pain in the ass, co-leader, patsy, "associate, Captain Sykes already?"

The fact that she was, for all intents and purposes, a superior, made Jane stop slouching and almost stand up, but she was already sitting and that would just be awkward. "Yeah, I mean, yes, briefly."

It became pretty clear from the get go that Jane hadn't been expected. Captain Sykes' reaction to his arrival pretty much all the evidence he'd needed. It wasn't really a big deal, it just highlighted the fact that his CO really wanted him gone and hadn't wasted the time in getting rid of him.

"Lieutenant Worth, ma'am. But you already know that."

"Please, drop the ma'am." Emma just waved her hand, dismissing that. No one called her 'ma'am', it was Miss Frost, Frost or Emma depending on who they were. "I've read up on you, yes, Lieutenant."

Mutation, rank, his notations in his file. The fact that he'd been with the team in Russia wasn't really high up there, Russia had been a complete waste of time for everyone and Emma wasn't going to hold that to any standards.

"How're you finding things now, Lieutenant? I trust now that everything is settling down?"

They liked to be so damn informal, it was a peeve sometimes. "Miss Frost," he could manage that, sure. "Yeah, it's been okay. Settling in just fine."

So far that had amounted to little more than figuring out the layout of the place. He'd made the list of vehicles he could pilot, added in the ones that were most likely to suit the base and then added notations for the ones that were already available at Fairchild base. It seemed to take less time than he'd thought it would, but there wasn't much else he could do.

Not while he was quarantined to his room. "Things seem to be falling into normal though, right?"

Jack gave the guy that had sat down by him the once-over as he nursed the cup of coffee he was holding. He almost looked familiar, but with as many people had come and gone in the time Jack had been with the team, all the faces had begun to blur together.

He could only assume the man was new because with the rare exception, the majority of the team knew not to sit anywhere near him. Without bandying any introductions or formalities, he asked the first question that was on his mind. "When did you get here?"

Jane wasn't aware that there was a no-sit sort of deal going on with the older guy, but that wasn't exactly a big deal for him. He'd figure out the faces and the tendencies later, hopefully before he really trodded on any toes.

"Um, a few days ago." It almost felt like the middle of a conversation, but Jane was pretty sure he hadn't slept through the start -although he could've. It took it as simply a personality quirk. "Round about the time everyone was locked in their rooms."

"That explains why I didn't see you before now." While Jack had been the only member of the main squad who had ended up exempt from the quarantine, he'd been too preoccupied with beating Pyro into a bloody pulp to much concern himself with anything else.

He added another packet of sugar into his coffee, stirring slowly. He stared down at the dissipating granules while he asked the next question. "You got a name?" Jack fervently hoped it wasn't another stupid codename like half the camp had. Why they saw the need for them Jack would never know.

"It would indeed explain that," Worth nodded, so the old guy must've kept track of who came in and what not. Understandable really, since this team was probably one of them most dysfunctional things going.

Taking a long drink of his own coffee, Jane nodded, of course he had a name. "Worth." Because he wasn't in the habit of giving out his first name, no matter how much his mother rolled her eyes. "Officially the new pilot for the team that has no air crafts."
