Hi. I've been following this community for a whileand I now have a situation of my own that I need advice on. I worked 9 years at my last job and really went into the company applying for one position but getting another based on the fact that I was familiar with certain software though I was not trained/went to school for the particular position. Working on a mac isn't hard. Most programs run nearly exactly the same. As far as being confident in your abilities GET CONFIDENT! Go in there like you know what you're talking about, and if there's something you're not sure of, be honest, and let them know that you were hired at your last job with out skills and you learned them while still being a productive employee.

Thank you. I will give her a call and hope she'll set up an interview. I'll try to be as confident as I can be.

After 9 years it's likely you know more than you give yourself credit for. Also, even if it's a larger company, your skills must be in line with their needs else they wouldn't have contact you...believe me there is plenty of workforce out there looking for jobs.

When you respond try to be polite and ask for an interview so that you can meet them in person. If they ask about your computer skills, just say that you have "limited experience" with MAC, but that you are looking forward to learning on their system. Let them know too that you realize they are a larger company than your last employer but that you are taking it as a challenge to learn something new after 9 years in your last position.

Good luck!

Thank you! Now I know what to say when the PC/Mac question comes up. I will call her and hopefully get an interview set up.

Will they train you? If so, then I would take the offer. Considering how hard PC's can be to fix, a Mac should be easier even.

Hmmm I will find out. If it's a totally different system then I would need the training but if just the same programs but on a mac then I just need the time to get adjusted to a Mac set up I think.

Great ideas ! masteralucard August 16 2009, 21:55:24 UTC
these are all good tips. i would say be honest since you dont want to go in expecting them to expect more from you. i agree that you prob have learned more than you recognize--consider that you know more than a newbie coming in, you have 9 yrs expierience when the requirements today are lookling at close to 5-10-15 yrs too. so in a way you are ahead of the game ( ... )
