Hi. I've been following this community for a whileand I now have a situation of my own that I need advice on. I worked 9 years at my last job and really went into the company applying for one position but getting another based on the fact that I was familiar with certain software though I was not trained/went to school for the particular position. Great ideas ! masteralucard August 16 2009, 21:55:24 UTC

these are all good tips. i would say be honest since you dont want to go in expecting them to expect more from you. i agree that you prob have learned more than you recognize--consider that you know more than a newbie coming in, you have 9 yrs expierience when the requirements today are lookling at close to 5-10-15 yrs too. so in a way you are ahead of the game.

i am in the same type of boat in the sense where i have been unemployed since Jan from a job i worked 5 1/2--the longest i have ever had-and what most human service and civil service jobs are looking for and i know i can use the skills obtained in other jobs but finding what i have gained can be tricky i think.

Be COnfident with a Self - Inventory

-think about what personal expectations and personal growth you have learned about yourself during this job. have you found you are more multi task oriented, how do you handle stress, wat times of day or work are you better at ?

-Try to figure out projects, suggestions, things that you have done that benefited the company/your work and has created results that made things better, saved money, or changed the way things were done even if it was to file things/organize/communicate better
-add it to your resume
-list any achievements even if it was an award or praise for being in the company 3 yrs, 5, more than 5 etc.
-How did your probational period and yearly reviews go ?

the only problem i have is thinking back and trying to find examples to throw on the resume -since i have suggested alot that occured that produced more positive results. but i think prospective employers WANT to see the results vs. what was your job title how many years and what you did daily. not to mention it helps with the interview too so you can elaborate and show your efforts.

Good Luck !!

These are really good ideas and taking the self inventory will prepare me for the interview. Thank you so much.
