Quick question-

So, I went to a vocational school, and one of the things they do for you is make you a resume. At the bottom of mine they put "references avialable upon request". What are your feelings on this? Good or bad idea? Should the references be automatically put on the resume? Will the resume go right in the trash if I don't put it on there?

question, resumes

I've always left the Reference Available Upon Request as my last line on the resume. Like the poster above mentioned. If it happens to be a job in a certain industry like an attorney...I can be sure to include an attorney reference. Also it makes the employer required to contact you if they even have you on their short list. Another chance to sell yourself.

i think it depends on the industry.

i used to put "ref available upon request" when i needed to fill space on my resume. i removed it when i had enough jobs to fill the space, as that is more important then the ref line.

something to consider.

I leave references off as a whole, because most jobs I apply for in which I need to upload my resume, as for the references later in the application.

ask for the references. Bah. Stupid typing.

I was told that it's generally assumed that references will be provided upon asking and references aren't usually found on the resume anymore. so the sentence at the bottom of yours, is a bit redundant. You can take it off or leave it as you like. Either way, I think it'll be fine.

I like the idea of leaving the statement, especially if you are someone that maybe does not have a ton of work history and are relying on personal and character references instead of occupational.

I suppose it's possible to include your references on resumes, but I wouldn't. I always like to give mine at request only, I know it makes my friends and co-workers feel more comfortable about me handing out their phone numbers. Also, if something happens and you know a person cannot be contacted for a reference, it's easy to substitute at last minute. (This happened to me recently, I had to of my references be unreachable for a period of time due to one moving and one changing their phone number.)

Of course, if you have a great amount of work history, you could just leave it off altogether. I like the way mine looks because if I put another job on mine, it'll look too cluttered and this one line does just fine. ^___^
