Quick question-

So, I went to a vocational school, and one of the things they do for you is make you a resume. At the bottom of mine they put "references avialable upon request". What are your feelings on this? Good or bad idea? Should the references be automatically put on the resume? Will the resume go right in the trash if I don't put it on there?

question, resumes

Every single resume advice bit I've read has advised against putting references on the resume -- it is assumed you'll provide them when they are asked for -- you probably shouldn't even mention references in the resume.

So, I should probably just delete the reference to the references (heh) that is there?

That's what I've been told!

Of course, hiring managers are as human as we are, but I think it's conventional to keep references off the resume.

Leaving them off does not necessarily count you out in my experience. Interviewers, employers, screeners etc know that they can easily just say "oh hey, and can you provide us with a list of references?" easier than they can get rid of qualified canidates for not spelling it out on the resume.

I've been contemplating taking mine off and just giving them out on request. Mostly because then I can choose which reference I give the employer, such as one I think one would be more suitable for a particular job than another.

I took a workshop that said 'References available upon request' is perfectly acceptable on a resume, so I'd leave it as is or remove it if you want, but don't put your actual references on your resume.

I've never heard of putting your references directly on your resume...that just seems weird. I've been told that it is outdated to put the "references available upon request" on your resume, it is just assumed that you will provide them if asked.
