Some preliminary thoughts on DH

Clearly this will be a jumble, because my version of meta always IS, and it will be spoilerish if you have not read Deathly Hallows, particularly as I'm going to start at the end. Any further opinions, etc. of mine will likely be confined to hpbook7thoughts; this is just my initial brain dump and I wanted it in my own LJ, so don't worry for your friendspage if ( Read more... )

I feel disloyal, really, by admitting that the epilogue felt kind of fanficish to me, too. I mean, it was good and I really did like it, but it did feel *squirms uncomfortably* a bit cliche. But it was good! I liked it, honest! And JKR had said before that Harry would never be a teacher, so that part was no surprise to me ( ... )

I didn't get a headache, but I was really stiff, lol. I'm normally a restless sleeper but I actually stay still when reading and my body wasn't too thrilled with that part!

I didn't know Jo'd said Harry would never be a teacher; I really haven't followed the masses of interviews over the years. It's interesting that she stuck to it, then. :)

I haven't read any of them or seen the films. What would you recommend I do first?

Of all the events in all the books, I believe that piece is there because J.K. Rowling and her target audience needed it to be there - NOT because the story did.

Agreed, and I also think JKR wrote it partly to stop people sending letters asking her to write about their lives after Hogwarts - although now she'll probably get thousands of letters moaning about how much the epilogue "sucked". Poor JKR! I didn't mind the epilogue, personally.

I loved Snape's motivation for protecting Harry all these years, and I thought it was wonderfully in character - he wasn't doing it for Harry's sake, he was doing it for Lily's. I felt quite sorry for Snape at the end. He had a hard life, and it would have been satisfying for him to find happiness eventually. And I used to hate Snape! :)

All in all, a enjoyable read.
