Some preliminary thoughts on DH

Clearly this will be a jumble, because my version of meta always IS, and it will be spoilerish if you have not read Deathly Hallows, particularly as I'm going to start at the end. Any further opinions, etc. of mine will likely be confined to hpbook7thoughts; this is just my initial brain dump and I wanted it in my own LJ, so don't worry for your friendspage if ( Read more... )

I haven't read any of them or seen the films. What would you recommend I do first?

It really depends on how long you want to wait to get to the end - the 5th movie just came out, and the 7th/final book. It'll be probably 3 years before the final movie is done! That said, especially as Order of the Phoenix IS in theatres now, I'd suggest the movies first, so you can see that on the big screen, and then go back and read the books and see all the extra stuff that didn't fit into the movies. :)

Well...yeah. *giggles* In all seriousness, the series is a very engaging coming-of-age story in a richly imagined fantasy setting. Ultimately the reason that it's so enthralled so many is a combination of those things and of the characters - they are fully realised people and despite their magic, Harry, Ron and Hermione are characters that are universally relate-able. People are what make ANY story worth reading, imo.
