Went to the zoo yesterday. Saw two peacocks with their tails up. One of them was just sitting on the patio of the food court, showing off. It was quite funny, and totally beautiful. Also, saw a rattlesnake yawn, two grizzly bears play fighting in a pond, penguins, otters, elephants, and meerkats. I love the zoo.

You know, the funny thing about Jane Eyre is-- and I've never seen an adaptation address this-- it doesn't take place in the 1840s. This was pointed out to me in an introduction to the edition I was reading. There's only one moment that points to a specific date but there's this part where St. John brings out a book that's supposed to have just been published, and it's one that came out in 1811. Evidently.

I haven't seen the new one yet, but I can't wait to. I actually didn't like the latest BBC adaptation. Why is it your favorite?

I think it's partly because the look of the 1840s lends itself better to gloomy and gothic and plain Jane. Everybody thinks of 1808 as fluffy and light and white dresses. If you go for 1808 people confuse it with Jane Austen (sad, but probably true).

Honestly I'm not sure I remember why the BBC version is my favourite; it's been a while since I saw it last. I like the fact that it's a miniseries, and I really like Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson. I know there are probably better reasons why I liked it, but that's all I remember. Must do a rewatch.

Actually, I looked it up. 1808. Walter Scott's poem Marmion is referred to as "a new publication" when Jane is staying with her cousins.
