I know someone who was on the cookie diet last year. I had never heard of it before meeting her, and I was surprised by the whole concept of it. She said that she had metabolic syndrome, and there was a high possibility that she would end up diabetic, so she was trying this as a way to jump start weight loss before making serious life changes. She had joined some kind of sport team as well and between the two things, she had lost a significant amount of weight. If someone needs something like this to encourage making lasting changes, I can't argue with that. I doubt it's sustainable and think it is likely harmful in the long run, but some people do need to see dramatic results to encourage them to continue. Then again, it does seem like something that could be a crutch.

BTW - I agree about body changes before weight loss. Remember the whole muscle-is-denser-than-fat thing. When I took fitness classes in college (yes, we actually had gym requirements), we had to measure ourselves at the beginning and end of the semester.
