Reading through the NYT Health section this morning and came across an article about the newest fad diet:
The Cookie Diet.
Seriously? What is wrong with people that they buy in to this crap? How stupid do you have to be to think this is actually going to help you? As one nutritionist in the article said: sure you'll lose weight initially when you cut your calorie count to less than 1,000 kcal a day, but you'll probably end up gaining it all back the minute you get off the diet. And the thing that really weirds me out is that the leader of this cookie diet won't say what exactly is in his cookies that make them such a miracle diet food. God knows what you are actually eating! He even admits that you might end up with nutritional deficiencies while following his cookie program and thus includes multivitamins with every weekly plan purchase. ...seriously? Why does this sound like a good plan to anyone?!
I really wonder if any of the people that buy in to these kinds of diets have actually tried the change in lifestyle approach (you know, real food, smaller portions, less junk, more exercise) before going to something that sounds this ridiculous. I'll be the first to admit that the whole weight loss thing is not easy and very frustrating, but I also have to admit that I haven't really been focused on the whole exercise thing as much as I probably need to be to see any kind of result (although on that tangent, talking to several women in my new running group, apparently you see body shape changes far sooner than actual weight loss in numbers...so I think I really need to take measurements and write things down for future comparison). Did they try to change their lifestyle and decide it was too hard (which I kind of have to laugh at, if that's the case, given the restrictiveness of these extreme diets they are following)? Or maybe the results weren't as fast as they wanted? And what do they think is going to happen when they have reached their dieting goals and go off the plan if they haven't really changed anything? I'm just really baffled.
