The brown dress: finished product

Apr 13, 2010 11:55

Some of you may have noticed that I didn't give an update on the outcome of the brown dress sewing project (previous posts here and here). Well, I had nearly finished sewing it at the last update, and in fact had it completed in time for the wedding, when I realized two things ( Read more... )

Thank you! It moved very nicely as well. One of the other advantages of doing it up in ruching is that I could have a dress that didn't get in the way of my feet when I was doing dance steps that needed freedom of movement.

That's an absolutely gorgeous dress!

Also, I know *exactly* what you mean about the term for the distaste of a creator for their creation. I wish I knew what that word was, because there must be one, somewhere. Perhaps in French. The French have all sorts of lovely useful words.

Thank you! I have also seen it in every author on my friendslist, so I assume it's just part of the creative process. I'm better at dealing with it when it comes to clothing and cooking, but I pretty much gave up creative writing because I can't plow through it enough to keep going in that creative area. My understanding from the researchers I work with is that it extends to writing manuscripts as well.

One would hope that people such as building engineers and doctors were less prone to it, but I assume they deal with a form of it as well.

my agent says she always knows a book is going to be broken when the writer likes it. *g*

Also, beautiful dress.

I have learned to avoid pretty much every book that has PR that sounds like "I just sat down to write one day and the book flowed out, effortlessly, even though I've never written before, and I was done the entire thing in two weeks and it didn't need any editing!". These are usually the bestsellers that end up being sold in the grocery store checkout lines. They make me weep for humanity.

Thank you. It moves pretty well too.

That did work out very well. I looked at the pictures in order before going back to read the text, and while I thought the first set looked pretty good, as soon as I saw the second set I thought, "Yeah, that really is a decided improvement." The pictures of you wearing the dress just confirmed it for me. Also, that's a great color with your hair and complexion.

I have no idea what you're seeing as imperfections. I just think it's beautiful.

Thank you! I have learned what colors work well for me (darker blues, greens, rusty reds and warm browns), so I had hopes this would turn out well. I'm glad that it did.

There are a lot of spots where there are literally loose threads, seams that are a patchy finish, and crayon marks from where I was figuring out where to place the gathers. Fortunately, none of those show in the pictures.

Just gorgeous! It has many of my favorite elements, from the grommets/lacing to the draping/runching, and I love the way it catches the light.

Thank you! I haven't tried any of those before on this scale, so it was an experiment. I'm glad it came out well.
