Many self-appointed defenders of capitalism seem to be embracing an ethical philosophy of finger-pointing.  With one of these fingers, they point to a government that overspends, over-regulates and under-delivers.  With another, they point to the supposed failure of large numbers of individual citizens to demonstrate adequate drive or to ( Read more... )

If the proponents of capitalism are only able to pursue profit and to blame others for not providing it with the exact conditions they insist are necessary to optimize that pursuit, then there is no reason for us to grant them much of a place at the table of public discourse. If, on the other hand, they are willing to genuinely grapple with issues of moral good and to engage in the rigorous self-examination that is intrinsic to the pursuit of that good, it may be worthwhile to hear them out and grant them a place in a free and just society.

Bingo!

This was a very decent piece of writing, you should consider putting it somewhere else more public or selling it.

I prefer to think of it as the Spoiled Kid syndrome. There is zero accountability in American corporate governance. So what do we expect? We really think the kid with the cookie jar and a golden parachute has any sense of responsibility for anything? They're goddamn titans of industry, don't you know, they're are in themselves, the incarnation of a higher moral essence and good that justifies its own existence.

This is overall a good post. I agree that several persons who share the same conclusions I do about having free-market preferences tend to over-romanticize certain aspects and elevate entrepreneurs to an infallible status which no living human being can live up to ( ... )

At the same time I would like to note that a good dose of humility could be had by all comers, politicians included, who speak with the belief that nothing one of their hands has ever touched could have ever had a consequence they didn't plan for or was not a net-gain for society.
