The Doughnuts of Doom

So, I'd like to take a little break from the federal budget wank and show y'all what great things state governments are doing these days, in the face of their own budget dilemmas. Back in my ancestral homeland of Kansas, the state Department of Health and Environment is tackling important issues and solving thorny problems that affect the daily ( Read more... )

Aw, thanks for including provinces in the question. To answer, the Ontario Legislature took 3 days to debate whether to create a Meningitis Awareness Day. In the end a they couldn't reach a consensus so a committee was formed to give a report. I know I can't wait for the result!

Also, A+ write-up. :)

Well, my parish still won't give up the corpse of Jim Crow:

My state government's legalizing creationism in the Public Schools and Birtherism:

Fortunately our neighbors are Texas (where the governor preaches fiscal conservatism but doesn't follow it himself) and Mississippi (where Haley Barbour just needs to be himself).

Thank you, I appreciate it.
It looks like it was a day for long posts, with lots of macros, including a mod, and I was at work all day....sigh, now I feel bad (well not bad exactly) for mentioning it to you this morning.

Ah, yes, casinos...Kansas is going to open some of those soon. We got tired of everyone going to Oklahoma and Missouri to gamble, so we figured, let's let the state operate some here! Because if anything screams sinful adult entertainment, it's more state bureaucracy!

Last year, my state rejected a transgender rights bill that would've made us one of the first in the nation to formally protected trangendered individuals from discrimination in the same way we protect against racial, sexual, and national origin discrimination. It failed mostly because Republicans succeeded in calling it the "bathroom bill" and scaring people into thinking "perverts" (because transgendered = different = perverted dontchyano) would be in the bathroom with the women.

Coulda been worse. The other big conservative issue at the time was repealing our gay marriage statute (the first state in the union to legalize gay marriage absent threats from the judiciary). Thankfully that one failed. Lot easier to kill a bill than to pass it, I suppose, especially in a state house that has more members than the US Congress.

The sad things is how many people genuinely subscribe to the whole "transgender = pervert" thing and don't understand why their revulsion is offensive. :(
